Purpose, motivation
Only some have it, everyone needs it.
Someone I have lot of respect for told me that the key to life is to find a main purpose and stick to it. Find one thing to focus on and put as much energy as possible into it. Not to say one can’t have other interests, but those other interests must give something to the main purpose.
I understand the value of this. It makes sense to always have a focus, something you’re building towards. You can never be perfect at anything, so any one thing could always be perfected.
The problem I see is that in today’s world there are an unlimited number of choices and an infinite number of distractions. The way I see it, those that always have one specific, larger purpose excel through life more efficiently.
Too many people however, are pulled in too many directions.
I myself am within grasp of a central purpose, but I’m indecisive. I have a handful of things that I really want to focus on, all of them very unrelated to each other. It’s been the same few things for YEARS. Each focus is worthy of every moment of spare time, but over the years I’ve become a master of distraction.
For instance, free time… 3 main things that I want to focus on are options, all so worthy I can’t make up my mind, so cycle through each of them briefly, then find a 4th option to distract myself until the free time is gone. The 4th option is always fun; socializing, video games, movies, or just exploring the gigantic distraction that is the internet. But what do you really get out of those last three things besides social media culture references and lost time?
I know quite a few people in the same dilemma. They’ve never brought it up, so I don’t know if it bothers them, but I see it there. A large portion of others I know don’t even go so far as to bother having too many choices… their choice IS distraction, and they fluctuate between distraction and boredom.
One of my problems is that I know I’m good at anything I apply myself to (with the possible exception of grammar), but then lose interest in whatever it is as soon as I’m making progress.
I want constant stimulus, and I can’t seem to find any one thing that can provide me that, so I go after lots of things, but as they say; “A jack of all trades is a master of none.” But whatever. I’m a master at finding distraction which is girls.
What was I talking about?
