How are you all so smart???

I initially started this account so I could learn more about Somali history and how our culture has continually evolved from way back when until the civil war over the summer but I'm STRUGGLING to keep up! I only barely manage to grasp what @Internet Nomad & @Yami are saying as well as @techsamatar 's daily musings about the yahuud.

How did everyone active on the culture/history/politics side of this site begin learning Horn African history?

all of those accounts are run by one person, giving off the illusion that somalis can be smart, when in reality we know that is false.

There's a lot to learn, and the depth depends on your interests. I personally prefer a broader view, focusing on racial history based on Islamic sources and narrations, understanding what defines Somalis. Politics, often overlooked by many Somalis, is another area of interest for me, exploring how we ended up in our current challenging state. Tribal dynamics is also something majority of people on this forum are fixated on. So, it really depends on where you want to start.

A mixture of reading books, analysis genetic data, clan oral stories, and forming hypothesis mixing all three. It’s also useful knowing more than English/Somali in this section since a lot of Somali history is kept under wraps in old Arabic & Amharic archives.

A good book to start with is Futah Al Habesh. It’s from a first hand account of a war between Muslim groups in modern day north west Somalia & Eastern Ethiopia declaring jihad against the Solomonic dynasty.

Likewise, I also prefer to learn things in a broader, maybe even oversimplified way before diving into niche subtopics. I'm more interested in politics and tribal dynamics honestly. I suppose with our people, they go hand-in-hand, I guess.

STFU and observe before you engage in FKDing is the best advice anyone can give you. Preferably don’t engage and solely observe if you were not born in the penisula.

It takes years if not decades, but you will learn in due course the what’s what’s and the who’s who.

Trust me you’re gonna learn the hard way if you start running your mouth on stuff you have little idea on.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's FKDing?

Sister, if this is your intention, head on over to FKDspot, the acronym stands for the Foundation of Knowledge Devolopment. If you want to learn more about our inclusive history, i recommend starting from the very first page. It’s hosts a treasure trove of literary and historical documents.

Keep an open mind, don't take word of mouth as the truth, do your own research, accept that you can be wrong and be humble.

I just listened and whenever I heard something pop up that I didn't understand I searched it in the forum.
