It's not appropriation in either case. Particularly if you are surrounded by the group/ethnicity and/or acknowledge the source. What would be appropriation is not crediting the group. Or cultural/intellectual theft i.e. stealing folk music samples without asking for permission and paying.

Well typically the stereotype for MJs as far as I know is dark skin and loose curly timo jileec hair. I have a friend Zakariya who fits this description and he’s MJ(not that it makes the stereotype true)
