Has there ever been a Somali railway project ?

I was watching this video about Japan's successful railway network, and I can't help but think about how well this would work for Somalia

How well could the same thing for Somalia work ? Considering the new Mogadishu and Berbera economic zones this could very well be a possibility for Cargo transportation in the coming years.

The Italians made tons of money by transporting agricultural goods from plantations in Jowhar to Mogadishu by rail.

But for passenger transportation, the only line that I would see being very popular would be Bossaso-Garowe-Lascanod-Burco-Hargeisa-Borama and also possibly Hargeisa-Berbera.

I made a thread about this a few months ago, buts good that people actually think about Somalia needs a rail line that connect all cities. I like your map but I wished you add a line from Berber to Bosaso

If the British had built a railway in somalia before they had left instead of destroying the Italian one. I cant even imagine what the current timeline would have looked like.

Somalia is almost double the size of Japan off the top of my head but in times of stability something like this would be possible. I'd love to see a train that goes by the coast. It'd make a nice view.

I'm no expert but Somalia could benefit off better urban planning and a well connected bus or tram system within major cities. Tuk tuks seem unsafe and unorganised.

I didn't make the map but Sanaag is a very mountainous area it's practically impossible to do that and would cost a lot of money and maintenance to connect Berbera to Bossaso in a straight line, it's cheaper to just do Berbera-Hargeisa and then to Garowe and Bossaso trough Burco and Lascanod.

The British didn't care about Somalis they were on the verge of handing SL to Menelik and gave NFD and Galbeed to Ethiopia and Kenya on purpose, what makes you think they would build expensive infrastructure and development ?

Some roads aren't even wide enough for cars, let alone buses, Xamar urgently needs better urban planning.

Why would they make the roads narrow? :mjlol:

The city looks nice mashallah but disjointed and poor. There's not much traditional architecture of any kind. Even shamelessly copying a few islamic architecture inspired buildings would have been better to introduce some originality. But, Mogadishu gets bombed often so I don't blame them.


The problem is that it's too late to fix it without a lot of effort. A lot of it is privately owned.
