Somaliland: ‘I convinced my sister not to do type III FGM on her daughter’ These are the young men struggling against all odds to enact change in a generation and improve the lives of Somali women

In Somaliland, Unicef estimates that about 98% of girls and women between 15 and 49 are subjected to some form of female genital mutilation – almost a despairing figure. This is largely an issue in the hands of women, and not something openly discussed. Yet Unicef believes it is vital that men are part of any solution. Young men in the region who are against the practice are forming a growing movement for change, but the drought crisis is dominating people’s lives right now.

Khadar, 23
“The first thing I did as a campaigner is convince my sister not to do Type III FGM on her daughter. I told her about the side effects and I also made her listen to Islamic scholars that are against the practice to show her that FGM is not religious. After a lot of negotiation, she agreed and didn’t do it. I am proud of that.” Khadar was trained in FGM awareness by the indigenous-Somali organisation Candlelight.

“Men, in general do not speak about FGM. It remains a taboo,” he says.

“Men here are the heads of the household and this means they can play an important role in ending FGM, if they chose to.”

While studying at New Generation University College in Hargeisa, Khadar was exposed to the realities and consequences of FGM on women’s health. “Once I realised the psychological and physical trauma, I was against it.” He became an anti-FGM ambassador at his university and felt more confident in challenging some of his peers. “When I tell others all the facts, especially young people, they are easily convinced. Lack of knowledge is the reason FGM is still practiced in Somaliland. I am confident that FGM can be eradicated in one generation.”

Mohamed, 23
Sitting opposite him drinking spiced tea, Mohamed nods his heads in agreement. “Our parents’ generation really didn’t talk about FGM but now, you know, we speak about it among our friends. This will make a big difference.”

Also trained by Candlelight and now working as a project co-ordinator for ActionAid, Mohamed has embraced social media to spark debate.

“Men have seen first hand the impact of FGM on their wives. In some, lesser ways, men have been affected too. Many say that they struggle because they see their wife in pain and cannot have sex with them. They see that FGM takes away all sexual pleasure for women. They want their wives to have pleasure too. And so largely, they are against it.

“FGM can cause divorces, a bad thing for society. But because there is no dialogue and because it is taboo, they don’t speak out.” he says.

Social media, both men agree, has proved an important tool. “I have been posting many different articles about the work we are doing. Due to the sensitive nature of the topic, it has proved a good way for people to read about it in their own time, from the privacy of their phones and computers.”

No one will come after him. People are starting to realise fircooni FGM is bad anyway.
I guess things changed. The last time I was there some wadaado had the people come together to let them know it's haram and to stop doing it. They ended up getting threatened.

Great article adeer. The bashing stems from the fact that some men on this forum support FGM not that all men support it. Nice to see these stories.

This is just a forum but in real life where it matters it is Somali men that are against FGM while many Somali women want to continue this tradition.

I agree. My father stopped my mother from having it done on me. I think my generation of girls are strongly opposed to it but going on twitter and yelling about it online won't do much. I will do my best to spread my information if I do go to Africa in the future.

That is true but the power lies with men in the household. Solution is not screaming in videos but encouraging men in Somali households
to part take in stopping this practise otherwise the Somali females will continue doing it if there is no intervention (like your father did).

What we said before many times in this forum. Even the UN and UNICEF know it is a practise pushed by Somali females.

Kham

King of the Khamites
Why my Somalis do you listen to propganda? More importantly Kushites why do you follow campaigns against FGM when its in your best interest? Why is it always non-doctors who have a say in the FGM issue.
Female circumcision is to be praised. Kham's will have all his daughters circumcised in the pharaonic traditions for there is no people smarter than the Ancient Egyptians who always followed the laws of nature. The Ancient Egyptians instigated circumcision for females as well as males to rid them of the supernumerary organs they knew nature had in accident given them. I want to talk about the 'kintr' (Clitoris) which isn't normal in women of the olden days because of the pure quality of the environment, sound nutrition during pregnancy, stress free pregnancy, and most importantly being sedentary lifestyle. In this Age of the Refined, of Chemicals, of Toxins, of False Foods (GMO's), of Pollution such as Xenoestrogens from perfumes, fragrances, etc.. BPA from Plastic. . Agricultural Pollution Pesticides, Herbicides, and Insecticides i.e. Agent Orange and Glyophosate.. of Air Pollution i.e. Carbon Dioxide, Car Exhaust Fume Emissions, etc... Sound Pollution which causes great stress on the body. Water Pollution i.e. Mercury in our seas thus seafood, Birth Control Pill peed into the water system by women btw dont drink municupal water not to mention Fluoride. Our lack of nutrition this is why everyone has open mouth syndrome (Kham has termed this) i.e. cuttlefish look this is due to lack of minerals in our soils due to Chemical Farming. Never before have we had to face such horrors as we do today in the Age of Industry and Technology.

As i said in the days of old women weren't born with a clitoris for it is unnormal. This is a sign of Androgny in modern women. Today it is enlarging and why"vaginismus" (Orgasms) has come into the world. You see a clitoris is not good for the health of a woman and is the cause of many gynecological problems which can be solved by getting rid of clitoris when a girl is young.
If the males were smart, they would run whenever a woman has a long clitoris for it is just a small phallus. Men today are not the men of old but no better than the women they fail to deal with.
The clitoris will grow with Testosterone and this is called Clitoromeglay. Women with high testosterone levels have enlargen clits, moustaches, beards at times, hairy arms and legs, deepen voices, etc... these women aren't women but pseudomales... its worth noting Testosterone also increases penis size which as a Naturopathic Doctor leads me to believe Clitorises are pseudo-penises.
https://www.google.com/amp/www.live...5-side-effects-of-high-testosterone-in-women/
As i said again clitorises are a sign of Androgny in the human-population and Androgny is death to a species. Clits are to women what Man-boobs are to men, just a degenerating population who will end up extinict if they don't smartern up.

During gestation, the hormones mix and instead of creating just a vaginal opening there is a slip up and a rudimentary phallus develops. Depending on how much male hormones she has, it will be either big or small, and by todays standards, more women are adapting to more male behavioral patterns.
About the fourth week a phallus develops in the female fetus, her genitals quite indistinguishable from the male (although the male has a urethral groove or orifice) and until the 12th week totally indistinguishable from a phallus and even a glans shows until it starts to shrink into a smaller phallus called a clitoris. The labia majora and labia minora are her versions of the male's scrotum that does not fully develop and these need to be gotten rid of and thus why I support the Pharonic way of female circumision.
A glance at Egyptian statuary, and even up until Greece and Rome, reveals the fact that the mons pubis did not end in genitals but was a solid organ in some women, a mark of purity. The ancients knew pubic hair and a clitoris were signs of Androgny and Degenracy. No wonder the Somali culture in baadiye the girls are fircooni and clean shaven this is to the Ancieny Egyptian to true sign of purity and beauty combine that with a hymen and she was the perfect spouse.

Strabo and Herodotus both reported on female circumcision, and its use in Egypt seems to stem right from the time we would expect, the Old Kingdom. The Koran makes no mention of it but Mohamed is said to have required it for both man and woman. The Muslims cut only the clitoris for the same reason it was done in the U.S. and Europe before the turn of the century and for ages before, to keep vaginismus (Orgasms)away and make intercourse as quiet as possible.

Kham will explain how the Clitoris is responsible for female orgasms. First remember that Testosterone is the hormone that has an effect on the Clitoris? Well testosterone is the 'Aggression Hormone' and this includes Sexual Aggression, this is why men always feel so horny because of this male hormone. Females who have high-testosterone levels have high libido or sexually aggressive thus highly promiscuous they are prone to multiple orgasms. Women who are fircooni have low-testosterone levels and high estrogen levels they are unable to get orgasms and have no dareem/dareen. These women are more trustworthy than their 'Sunnah' counterparts and even more so if a woman has never gotten anything cut..
Evidence you ask??
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.consumerhealthdigest.com/female-sexual-health/testosterone.html/amp

Clitoridectomies can be very hazardous if not done properly though and only a trained professional should perform it.
There are two kinds, the Tahurat Sunna "the purification of the law" and more revealingly, the Tahurat Farohin, the "purification of the Pharaohs." The former is removal of clitoris and labia minora, and in the second surgery, two thirds of the labia majora are removed also and it was said to be that practiced by the ancient Egyptians.
To be called the "son of an uncut woman" was a great insult in Ancient Kemet/Egypt it was liken to .

Another important fact the Female Hyena has an enlarged clitoris and it is impossible to tell her from a Male Hyena if wasn't for her ultra aggressive behaviors do to high-testosterone levels. The female hyena is a Matriach and she is Queen there is no King in a hyena pack. This animal is sited as another aberration of nature by the Egyptians and is one of the most animals by said people.
http://www.nytimes.com/1992/09/01/s...ow-puts-females-in-charge.html?pagewanted=all
"As a result of the androgen bath, both sexes end up with masculine-looking genitals, the male bearing the standard equipment, the female having an extremely enlarged clitoris that resembles a penis and fused, protuberant vaginal labia that look like a plump pair of testicles. Both sexes can and do get erections at the slightest provocation -- when sizing up a stranger, when greeting a friend. But though the two sexes look equal, they are not: the female is in charge."

This is eye-opening because women with clitorises get an erection also. Men listen to Kham very carefully it is vital that we continue FGM for the sake of the Patriachy and Mankind. When women have their clitoris removed they are much less aggressive, lesd sexual/horny, mother-material, and wife material. Science once again proves Tradition to be correct.
