Garissa for those that have never seen it

NFD is the newest of the 5 Somali territories (shanta Soomaaliyeed) and most Somalis have never seen what the cities there look like. If that is you, I give you Garissa, the biggest NFD city. It's a pleasant city on the Tana river (the 3rd permament Somali river) sourrounded by lush farmland irrigated by the river. The locals are hospitable and very cool temperament wise (you'll rarely see an argument or fight ever). The city is exceptionally green with trees planted everywhere (every house has at least 2 o 3 trees planted on its courtyard with the ubiquitous Geed Qareerow aka Geed Hindi aka Neem Tree being the most popular). Being situated along the banks of a river, the climate in Garissa is hot and humid all year round with the Jiilaal (Dec-March) being the hottest season (in most of Somali weyn this season is the coolest but in NFD and Jubbaland this is the hottest due to the equator). In comparison, the Xagaa (June-Aug) season is pleasant with cool temperatures and a lovely breeze for most of the day and some light rainfall most nights. Outside of this season however, there isn't much of a breeze in garissa due to its low elevation as it is by a river. Unfortunately, due to the abundant water, mosquitoes are a menace all year round in Garissa and especially during the wet season.

Being the biggest city between Nairobi and Kismayo, Garissa is a natural transport, business, and logistics hub and is an integral node in the livestock trade of the Greater Jubaland (Waamo) region. It's Wednesday livestock market is apparently the largest in East Africa. Education, both religious and secular, is plentiful and cheap in Garissa and of a high quality for African standards. The fact that most white collar jobs including teaching and lecturing in Somalia and now even DDS are held by graduates from Garissa schools and other NFD schools is testament to the quality of education in the city.

The population is large for Somali standards and fast growing. Challenges in the city include weak local government services and a lack of a master plan. If this is rectified, Garissa could quickly develop into one of the biggest and most economically vibrant cities in the Somali peninsula.

I knew Kenya had a better education overall when compared to fellow Bantu countries. I even chat with cagdheer Garissa resident on instagram sometimes and the kid writes in English better than me seems to be on board with all the slang words as well.

Education in Garissa is excellent for African standards. If they had the resources developed countries have, that city could produce scholars and scientists

Karim

I could agree with you but then we’d both be wrong

Garissa should've developed a lot better considering the relative peace and stability Kenya has enjoyed since the independence. This video suggests that it lags behind multitudes of other Somali cities in the horn when it should've been one of the front runners of development and growth.

Garissa and the rest of NFD only started receiving some government funding for development the last 12 years only. Before that, since independence NFD as a whole only received a security budget and zero for development. For example, the tarmac road was only extended beyond Garissa in the last 10 years and it is yet to reach Wajir.

In Sha Allah Garissa will get some IGCSE or IB testing centers next.

A pipeline from Waamo to Euro/American post-secondary would be great. Lots of kids already go from JL to Kenya for education.

Mogadishu is an exception idk why the city looks like qashin qub when all the money in the world is spent there. Why are you tryna sneak in Hargeisa btw
:chrisfreshhah:
Garissa It will be the same size as a neighborhood in Hargeisa
The thing that Somalis call magaalo is to the world a village because of the small population

do homes in garisa have AC? I am not talking about African built ooga buga stuff, I mean real AC from developed nations?
I can barely sleep if it goes above 15C, nigga is talking about 37C weather. I would never get a good night sleep.

I consider Hargeisa and Mogadishu to be cities and the rest are just tuulo and small towns
That's because most of you guys are concentrated in one city whereas OGs are spread out over a huge area. Garissa has a population of 450,000 and that's an actual census figure not a made up guesstimate. Half a million in just one of our dozen or so cities. Not bad eh ;)

Yeah as long as you can afford it. Electricity is way cheaper than Somalia so a lot of the well off people have ACs, especially in their bedrooms and living rooms

Kenyan Somalis are doing better than any other Somali group. I like the Sijus, good hearted and hard working people. My friend used to work in bank back in Nairobi he said every government institution has a quota for Somalis. Yes their regions are among the poorest but there is no active discrimination against Somalis as claimed by Somalis online. In Nairobi they buy properties and open businesses just fine and majority speaks the language and integrate into the society. It's night and day when compared to Somalis in Ethiopia who don't speak Amharic, majority of their federal position are filled from other ethnicities and many of them are moving to Jigjiga. As opposed to Kenyan Somalis who do the opposite, move into the capital and lay roots there. No Bantu is moving to NFD due to poverty. Wallahi Kenyan Somalis enjoy best of both worlds, eat their cake and keep their own.
