DJIBOUTI (HOL) - Somalia professionals and leaders meeting in Djibouti for the Annual Forum for Ideas have called for significant investments in education and human capacity to enable Somalis ably take charge in the rebuilding of the nation and compete favourably in the continent.
A communique from the Forum which closed Wednesday noted there was limited investment in education in Somalia and that most young people lacked access to education and opportunities to
build their capacity.
“According to studies and discussions presented at the conference, it is essential to increase the capacity of Somali human capital to complete with other people in the Horn of Africa and the continent,” the communique read in part.
It noted with concern that there was a limited number of students who had access to educational opportunities in Somalia. The forum, the communique notes, called on leader to prioritise access to quality education for young people.
The forum proposed that 2020 be declared the Year of Education’. The forum also called for increased investment in health and access.
The close to 200 professionals and leaders both in government and other sectors of society lauded the peace efforts in the region and called for increased engagement by Somalis across the region.
On Somalia and Kenya maritime case, the forum urged both countries to recognize the verdict of the International Court of Justice and work towards building closer relations.
Djibouti President Omar Guelleh closed the three days event.
