Nice video.

Ethiopia missed an early opportunity to industrialise like how Japan did in the 1800s & become a fully fledged Modern-State by the turn of the 20th century along side Japan, Europe & North America and also become a major warring faction in WW1 & WW2.

Ethiopia's main Achilles' heel was it's inability to manufacture its own consumer goods and military hardware to be self-sufficient to counter the rising European powers in the age of Imperialism.

I remember when I stopped in addis ababa for my connected flight to hargeisa, Ethiopa was in like 2006 or something, when it was really 2014.

Ethiopia is about 8 years or something behind the rest of the world on calendar for some reason. Always found that weird.

They look original but you have to know these might not be the personal Carbines/Rifles of the Emperor or Empress. The name on the rifles only say that this was made for the military unity that is directly under their command. Every high ranking member of the monarchy including Empress Taytu had their own army unit that they directly commanded including in times of war. So the rifles only say that these were made for the specific military unit that is either under the Emperor or Empress.

Taytu is seen by most Ethiopians as a brave and wise woman with great leadership quality. She is an inspiration for many women to achieve their dreams and become an equally important part of the society.

"According to the historians, she was always consulted by the Emperor prior to making important decisions. Thus, Empress Taytu was a key player in the conflict over the Treaty of Wuchale with Italy, which she tore up. Empress Taytu was the first to agitate the hesitant Emperor and other men to stand up for liberty, dignity, and against Italian aggression.[6] Deeply suspicious of European intentions towards Ethiopia, she was a key player in the conflict over the Treaty of Wuchale with Italy, in which the Italian version made Ethiopia an Italian protectorate, while the Amharic version did not do so. The Empress held a hard line against the Italians, and when talks eventually broke down, and Italy invaded the Empire from its Eritrean colony, she marched north with the Emperor and the Imperial Army, commanding a force of cannoneers at the historic Battle of Adwa that resulted in a humiliating defeat for Italy in March 1896. This victory was the most significant of any African army battling European colonialism.[7] "

Japan - extremely large literate population.
Ethiopia - illiterate population.

Japan - had a well developed national bureaucracy.
Ethiopia - feudal society.

Japan - had a very extensive, highly skilled craft industry that easily made the switch to industrial mode of development. Their workforce was already ready for it.
Ethiopia - had no light industry whatsoever.

I could go on.

I don’t know why you think that Japan magically became a modern state with an industrialized economy, and that a backward feudal kingdom like Ethiopia could also. It’s ridiculous. Neither the Ottomans or the Egyptians who had a much better chance were successful.

What is neftegna and why are people getting triggered on social media by this word?

I saw an amhara lady crying that the oromo youths called her neftegna.

Neftegna is an old term that was used to refer to the soldiers of the Empire during the feudal era. The word literary means the one who carries a gun and had originally no ethnic association. These are the soldiers of the empire who fought against Italy at Adwa and also who conquered the southern part as the soldiers of Menelik II. They were mostly composed of the showan Amharas and Oromos. Currently, Tigreans and Oromos use it as a code word to refer to someone whom they think is a chauvinist Amhara, but Amharas see it as a proud patriotic title who defended the country from Italian invasion. I've never seen an Amhara crying for being called neftegna though. Where is the video?

What does Woyane (Tigray) and Banda (Oromo) mean? What are somalis known as in Ethiopia?

Flying over your heads
Wallahi, Ethiopia, and Somalia have too much potential that shouldn't be wasted on beef. Self-sufficiency in both countries can benefit each other. The populations can push out so much products like foodstuff, textiles and petrochemical products that the diaspora will make bank in the West like the Chinese, the Turks and the Indians are doing in Europe.

What does Woyane (Tigray) and Banda (Oromo) mean? What are somalis known as in Ethiopia?

We call somalis warya :ftw9nwa: (just kidding). I think we don't have a distinct name for Somalis. Btw, Banda is not reserved for Oromos. The original word referred to the collaborators of Ethiopian/Eritrean origin who worked with Italy during the battle of Adwa. It means anyone who collaborates with foreigners to harm his own country. As far as I know it has no ethnic contention. It is the opposite of being patriotic and currently is used to label anyone who is not siding with the government on the issue of GERD dam.

Woyane means something like to revolt and was originally referred to a short lived revolt in the then wollo/Tigray against Haile Selassie. The TPLF then used the name to rebrand itself. Letter when TPLF became corrupt, the name became a synonym for looter, thief and barbaric or inhuman. Woyane is used explicitly for tigreans. The word woyane is part of the official name of TPLF in Tigrigna but not in the English version since it was added later for rebranding purpose and has no real connection with the first real woyane revolt.
