Excessive spending & Dependence to earn more

This is an excerpt from one of Ibrahim Dewla’s speeches. Its translated more or less meaning. My notes are in brackets.

Saeed Ahmed Khan was one our pious scholars who used to reside in Madinah. He would serve people that would come for Hajj. So he asked me lets go to the marketplace and purchase milk powder with which we can make tea. There were two types: One packet was 1 riyal and other 1.25 riyal.

On the 1.25 riyal packet it was written it would dissolve much faster versus 1 riyal packet which wouldn’t dissolve that quick. Saeed Ahmed Khan told me that we are not going to buy 1.25 riyal but 1 riyal one. We will keep stirring it until it dissolves. Why should we spend 0.25 riyal (unnecessarily)?

We learn this in company of pious people. There is no israaf (extravagance) in spending 1 riyal but there is in spending 1.25. Wealth is blessing from Allah. It shouldn’t be spent frivolously. It has been given to you (by Allah) to either:

  1. fulfill (your) needs and
  2. to serve others.
With wealth fulfill your needs so you can obtain ease. Let it (also) be used to serve someone (ie needy etc).

(1) Israaf:

If there is extravagant spending in wealth, the blessings of it (wealth) will be lifted.

[He (Allah) likes not Al-Musrifun (those who waste by extravagance).] (7:31)

Man’s dependence on wealth will then increase due to extravagant spending. Because (for example) he has spent 50 where he could have spent 5. He will then be compelled to earn more due to his spending habits.

So most of his time will be consumed on earning, which is what is happening now. Then there will be no time in learning about the religion and propagating it. This is an ill effect of extravagant spending. Life has been spent in extravagant spending. And the creed is what?

One good deed leads to another good deed.

One carnal desire leads to another desire (to be fulfilled).

One sin leads to another sin.

(2) Tabzir:

Extravagance (israaf) is the need was little but expenditure under taken far exceeded it. When there is extravagant spending and becomes habit, it can lead further. Without any reason whatsoever money is spent. For no reason people will spend their wealth. (It would be for) show! Money is being spent just on ‘show’.

This is called ‘tabzir’ meaning without any particular need money has been spent. Its an obsession to spend. This is path led and taught by the devil that we should not spend money where Prophet (saw) has mentioned. Prophet has asked us not to spend extravagantly but spend so fearing Allah.

But the devil will entice one to spend extravagantly. spend without reason, for show, just to fulfill desire. This will make one more dependent on wealth resulting in being dependent with earning more. Now they will have no time for the religion.
