ADDIS ABABA, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia is undertaking feasibility studies to export electricity to South Sudan and Somaliland.

Bizuneh Tolcha, Public Relations and Communications Director at Ethiopian Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Electricity said on Wednesday the plan is part of integrating the East African region through economic means including electricity.

The civil war in South Sudan and Somaliland's lack of international recognition has so far hampered efforts at economic integration with Ethiopia, Africa's second most populous nation.

Ethiopia already sells 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Sudan and around 80MW to Djibouti.

It's also constructing part of the 1,045 km Ethio-Kenya electricity transmission line which when completed will have the ability to carry 2,000 MW from Ethiopia to Kenya. The project is being undertaken by the China Electric Power Equipment and Technology company and is expected to be partially ready by the end of 2017.

Ethiopia has one of the cheapest electricity rate in the world while ours is one of the most expensive.

This would be greatly beneficial. It would lift financial burden off of the people and allow businesses to flourish.

We need to invest in electricity, We can't depend on foreign countries for electricity. This another unnecessary import that is taking out cash from the country.

It's 2017 and electricity and water is underdeveloped majorly.

9 cents per kWh is dirt cheap sxb. It's gonna be hard to compete with that price.

This is very good news! High electricity costs is no good for small businesses owners and is a detriment to the industrialization of SL.Just imagine the daily costs of just running a small factory in SL lol

Agreed sxb. We've got the highest PV solar potential in the horn

Solar farming could give Somalis a massive electricity surplus meaning cheaper prices and that we can become the exporters instead of importers.

We should be using clean energy since our hellhole land is being sexually abused without saliid macsaro by climate change :francis:

Let's take this one step at a time guys. Solar energy is very costly and even wealthier countries have trouble implementing them without
subsidises.

We can worry about energy independence when we first start generating enough wealth with the cheap electricity to afford it.

It's possible powering small tuulos with Solar and Wind.

But powering cities like Hargeisa,Borama Burco with thousands of homes and businesses or the cement factory in Berbera will not be feasible.
