Civil war enters second year in Ethiopia

The beef started when when Meles kicked out all Eritreans who were many generations living in Ethiopia especially Addis Ababa. They were given one way ticket to Asmara.
Afaworki was controlling TPLF and Addis ababa affairs but later Meles got wiser and smarter and during the Alitahd wars in the Ogaden.US gave Ethiopia weapons that is when Meles grew balls.
Then it escalated into becoming an Issue when Afaworki demanded that Meles to pay for the Asab port facilities using foreign exchange rather than Birr.

You have to know it was Afaworki who didnt want the Ogaden to gain independence and had sided pushed Meles to employ aggressive mechanism to overcome any rebellion in the Ogaden region.More than 10K Eritreans died in the Ogaden fighting ONLF and Alitihad in different periods.

When later the 1998 war broke Meles used all Ethiopian ethnic groups to fight Eritrea and also recruited more than 10K somalis .It was somalis that made the war decisive and Eritrea was defeated in the war by Ethiopia.Meles over run all the Eritrean posts and if he wanted would have invaded Asmara that time but due to IC pressure he took over Badme and left Eritrea.
what?:jaynerd: afwerki was once part of adis ababa guys? how come I ain't heard about this?
The war between ethiopia and afwerki was between amhara led ethiopia vs afwerki, not between meles and afwerki.

Ethiopia is redeploying about 3,000 troops [out of Somalia] to help with the Tigray offensive, the people said, asking not to be identified because they’re not authorized to speak to the media. The troops being withdrawn are Ethiopian National Defence Force soldiers and don’t fall under the command of the 5,000-strong African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia, they said.
These are the non-AMISOM dogs Farmajo used to kill civilians in South West State. Good riddance.
(Reuters) - Ethiopian police visited an office of the United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP) in Amhara region to request a list of ethnic Tigrayan staff, according to an internal U.N. security report seen by Reuters on Friday.

The local police chief informed them of "the order of identifying ethnic Tigrayans from all government agencies and NGOs", the report said, underlining fears over the ethnic undertones to a federal military push against the leaders of Tigray province in north Ethiopia which borders Amhara.
News also came on Friday that the African Union had dismissed its security head, an Ethiopian national, after Abiy's government accused him of disloyalty [i.e. being Tigray]. An analyst said the dismissal was part of the Abiy government's efforts to sideline prominent Tigrayans.

Ethiopia's Tigray conflict risks 'spiralling out of control': UN human rights chief

Fighting between Ethiopian government forces and rebellious northern leaders could spiral out of control and war crimes may have been committed, the United Nations said on Friday, as repercussions spread around the volatile Horn of Africa.
The 10-day conflict in Tigray region has killed hundreds, sent refugees flooding into Sudan, and raised fears it may also suck in Eritrea or force Ethiopia to divert troops from an African force opposing al-Qaeda-linked militants in Somalia.
It may also blemish the reputation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for a 2018 peace pact with Eritrea and had won plaudits for opening Ethiopia's economy and easing a repressive political system.
"There is a risk this situation will spiral totally out of control, leading to heavy casualties and destruction, as well as mass displacement within Ethiopia itself and across borders," United Nations human rights chief Michelle Bachelet said via a spokesperson.

A massacre of civilians reported by Amnesty International, if confirmed as committed by a party to the conflict, would amount to war crimes, she said

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed accuses the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which rules the mountainous region of more than five million people, of treason and terrorism.
Federal troops say the TPLF rose against them last week but that they have since survived a siege and recaptured the west of the region. With communications cut and media barred, there has been no independent confirmation of the state of the fighting.
The TPLF says Abiy's government has systematically persecuted Tigrayans since he took office in April 2018 and terms the military operations an "invasion."
Federal troops have been carrying out airstrikes and there has been fighting on the ground since Nov. 4. Ethiopia denied a TPLF claim that federal jets had knocked out a power dam.
Central government appoints leader for Tigray
Abiy, who comes from Ethiopia's largest ethnic group the Oromo, said parliament named former Addis Ababa university academic and deputy minister for science and higher education Mulu Nega, 52, as the new leader of Tigray.
There was no immediate response to Mulu's appointment from current Tigray leader Debretsion Gebremichael, who won a local election in September despite central government orders to cancel it, or from other TPLF figures.
Abiy this week urged Ethiopians to ensure Tigrayans are not targeted.
"We all must be our brother's keeper by protecting Tigrayans from any negative pressures," he said.
His opening of political space since taking office in 2018 exposed ethnic fractures in Africa's second most populous nation of 115 million people. Before the Tigray flare-up, clashes killed hundreds and uprooted hundreds of thousands.
An internal UN security report said Ethiopian police visited an office of the UN World Food Program (WFP) in Amhara region to request a list of Tigrayan staff.
The local police chief told them of "the order of identifying ethnic Tigrayans from all government agencies and NGOs," the report said, underlining the conflict's ethnic undertones. Amhara borders Tigray and its rulers back Abiy.
The United Nations told the police it does not identify staff by ethnicity, according to the report. There was no immediate comment from the Amhara regional police or government.
More than 14,500 Ethiopians have fled
Rights group Amnesty International said on Thursday that scores and possibly hundreds of civilians were stabbed and hacked to death in the region on Nov. 9, citing witnesses who blamed the TPLF. Debretsion denied that to Reuters.
More than 14,500 Ethiopian refugees — half of them children — have gone to Sudan since fighting started and aid agencies say the situation in Tigray is becoming dire. There are also concerns about a mass displacement of thousands of Eritrean refugees at a camp in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia's national army is one of Africa's largest. But its best fighters are from Tigray and much of its hardware is also there, under the Northern Command.
Ethiopia appears to be on a dangerous path towards civil war, with the federal government targeting the northern region of Tigray. We'll hear from two Tigrayan Canadians who are watching the conflict unfold from Ottawa. 11:03
Ethiopia hosts the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa. Nearly 4,400 Ethiopian troops serve in its Somalia peacekeeping force.
About 500 Ethiopian forces deployed in Somalia separately from the AU peacekeeping force returned home in early November, three sources told Reuters.
"A protracted internal conflict will inflict devastating damage on both Tigray and Ethiopia as a whole,

I completely forgot that the Amxaaro president was assassinated last year even though I made a thread about it.
Summary
  • The president of Amxaaro region has been has been assassinated in Bahir Dar
  • Federal military chief has been assassinated in his own home
  • National intelligence chief is under house arrest in Addis Ababa
  • Multiple generals loyal to Abiy have been shot dead
  • Gunfire in Addis Ababa
  • Internet has been shutdown in all of Ethiopia
  • Abiy is dressed like Farmajo in Ugandishu and hiding like Erdogan during Turkey's coup attempt:pachah1:
  • Ethiopian government claims that the situation is under control
  • All of this comes exactly 1 year after an assassination attempt on Abiy
Now we have this.

It's hard to imagine the TPLF could infiltrate that deep into Amxaaro territory.

TOBIN JONES, AU UN IST, AFP | In this handout pictured released by the African Union-United Nations Information Support Team, Ethopian soldiers, wearing their new African Union berets, ready themselves for departure after a ceremony in Somalia
Ethiopia pulled back thousands of troops who’ve been helping Somalia’s government fight an Islamist insurgency, according to three people familiar with the matter, raising concerns of a security vacuum in the war-torn nation.

Their departure from Somalia comes as federal soldiers continue to battle forces loyal to the ruling party in the northern Ethiopian region of Tigray. Last month, U.S. President Donald Trump told top advisers he’s also considering extracting U.S. troops from Somalia.

Ethiopia is redeploying about 3,000 troops to help with the Tigray offensive, the people said, asking not to be identified because they’re not authorized to speak to the media. The troops being withdrawn are Ethiopian National Defence Force soldiers and don’t fall under the command of the 5,000-strong African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia, they said.

A spokesman for the Office of the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia referred all questions to Ethiopian authorities. Redwan Hussein, state foreign minister and spokesperson for the Emergency Task Force in charge of the conflict, did not respond to questions on Ethiopia’s bilateral troops with Somalia.

Al-Qaeda-linked militants have waged an insurgency in Somalia since 2006 in a bid to impose their version of Islamic law. The group continues to carry out suicide bombings and other attacks in the Horn of Africa country despite being the target of frequent U.S. drone strikes, and the Somali government retains a weak grip on power.
The U.S. has 650 to 800 troops in Somalia, according to the U.S. Africa Command, including special forces that are helping train Somalia’s army.

TPLF will eventually lose, whether you guys like it or not. This is not the same as their strength in 1980-1991. As an Oromo, i wish to see both sides weakened, abiy and his amhara elite allies, and the tigrayan elites-both of whom covet oromia's resources.

Key differences:
*During the war against mengistu, the tplf had allies throughout ethiopia fighting the derg at the same time, albeit at varying levels of intensity, and had a key ally in eritrea-the eplf.
today, they have no allies in eritrea or in ethiopia, nor are there any other guerrilla armies that would stretch the ethio defense forces-thus allowing them to concentrate more and more forces to the war in tigray.
*They could count on getting supplies, fuel, etc, from Sudan and Eritrea-both of those borders are closed today.
*Tigrayans are not as eager to fight their own countrymen and women, just to defend tplf fat rich cats, who send their kids to schools in the west, while sending tigrayan kids to die fighting fellow ethiopians.
