Edmonton neighbourhood to be renamed to “Wîhkwêntôwin ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧ” starting January 2025

WHO tf can pronounce that shit??

:faysalwtf:

Imagine having to tell 911 where you are or type this shit into google maps?

The City of Edmonton has officially approved a new name for the community of Oliver.

The City says the community will now be called Wîhkwêntôwin ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ, pronounced We-Kwen-To-Win, a Cree word meaning Circle of Friends.

The triangles are actually part of the name :damn::dead::deadmanny:a whole game of geometry dash smh, and I thought Sankofa Square was bad!

RIP Canada, this name change will cost the city of Edmonton approximately $680,000

***PS*** I know the triangles are part of the Inuktitut script however unless they start teaching that in schools along with French they can stop with the bs, they trying to confuse people ATP

Lots need to be renamed. It's disgraceful how there are barely any places in the country with Indigenous names. We treat them worse than the Dalits and Madhibaan are treated.

I agree with you but if they want a name change, why not choose something that everyone can pronounce, and how can anyone learn to spell or type it especially with all the accents???

I saw it on Twitter even indigenous people themselves are complaining about it, it’s waste of money and if you ask me that $680,000 could be used to help support the indigenous people and their communities instead of some retarded ass name change that doesn’t make a difference in anyone’s life

The Canadian indigenous people deserve to be recognized and celebrate their existing in their own land. I will urge the dictator government of Canada, to change some or some state or cities name to indigenous Canadian names.

I agree but even they’re complaining because first of all that $680,000 could have went straight to them, they don’t even have clean drinking water how is a name change the priority? Let’s be real this is just cadaan people deflecting and distracting from the actual problems that need to be fixed 💯💯💯 y’all better open your eyes

I understand your sentiment but most places in Canada already have indigenous roots, second that $680,000 could be used to directly help their communities. The indigenous dont even have clean drinking water. How is $680,000 for a name change justified?

Case in point here are places in Canada with indigenous roots in their name, first on the list the country name itself

Canada
The name Canada is now generally accepted as originating from the St. Lawrence Iroquoian word kanata ([kana:taʔ]), meaning 'village' or 'settlement'.

Ottawa (capital)
The city name Ottawa was chosen in 1855 as a reference to the Ottawa River, the name of which is derived from the Algonquin adawe, meaning 'to trade.'

Toronto
The name Toronto is derived from an Iroquois term meaning 'where there are trees in water' in reference to a weir for catching fish

Ontario
The word “Ontario” comes from the Iroquois word “kanadario”, meaning “sparkling” water

Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan. The name of the province comes from the Cree name for the Saskatchewan River, “Kisiskatchewanisipi” or “swift-flowing river.”

Manitoba
Manitoba. The name is believed to have originated with Cree term "Man-into-wahpaow", meaning “the narrows of the Great Spirit”

So my question is WHYYY spend $680,000 on a name change when you could actually be helping indigenous communities and idk, give them clean drinking water !!!! Especially when 99% of Canada already has indigenous names YALL open your eyes this is FAKE virtue signalling to distract you!
