The problem is we are not a group of people that value work ethic as much as we should. I do not want to generalise, but it seems that many are hellbent on always taking the easy route, regardless of morality.

Example, historically blacksmiths, builders, carpenters and farmers have been looked down upon in Somali society. Those that took on those job roles were usually from low caste minority tribes like the Yibir and Tumaal.

Funnily enough on the other hand, everywhere else in the world those jobs that I have mentioned were considered honorable as it required a level of skill, hardwork and masculine strengh.

Hence why, I don't think we have a culture of men actually taking pride in hard work and producing something. If we did, most would be too ashamed to sit in Tim Hortons all day talking politics. If anything such behaviour would be stigmatised.
Somalis are a funny bunch looking down on certain jobs but won’t look down on taking benefits

@HalimaJ @AussieHustler

That’s really something. I still wish I had numbers, what kind of benefits are they giving out over there? How much cheaper is public housing and is it in shitty areas? Somalis should be exempted from claiming govt assistance wallahi. It’ll have better outcomes in the long run.

What’s your friend going to do, whistleblow?

@VixR

He doesn't want to blow the whistle yet because of the complexity of the issues involved and he doesn't want to pre-empt and damage the chances of those single mums and their kids who are genuine domestic violence victims. But as I suggested to him, a useful tool can be the media and especially the sensationalist media. Let's collect a dozen or so names and let them secretly film husband and wife meetings and then expose them as scams. If they are charged and sentenced to jail for their scams, the data of Somalis as a highly bracketed domestic violence abusers will be tainted and could never be used for policy and academic purposes. Any suggestions?

Some media operation along this line.

You cant be a hustler and have pride, it doesnt go together. But somalis are scam artist. There was an incident at my work where they dont recruit somalis from recruitment agencies anymore. They had problem with somalis for a while and when I came on board and was part of the recruitment people, the manager explained to me and said dont take this personal. but we have had bad experienced with somalis. I stupidly argued for my people and they say ok......one more chance then. This somali guy we had him for 9 weeks, he called in sick 6 fridays and 1 friday he had family isue he said. after 9 week he left after stealing stuff worth 10k and left the country.
Now thats a real nigga.

That’s interesting. My solution would be that they be more rigorous, it can’t be based on trust. They've easily violated that trust without a moment’s thought. They should start with policy changes, maybe if they were required to press charges in order to land the house, these couples would think twice, and it would lower the incidence of fake domestic violence scams? Or do you think they’d risk the record on the guy for something he didn’t do? I actually don’t know anymore.

Your video inadvertently gave me what I was asking for: numbers.

There is no way they would receive that much in the UK for just 2 kids. Probably why they never wanted to have a third :drakelaugh:

This.

I've never seen so many unemployed young Somali men and yet, the economy is booming and is hungry for people with skills in trade. You will see young Iraqis, Syrians new comers who are studying to become electricians, plumbers and other skilled technical jobs. Most of these young Somalis do “Academic” courses how to become doctors, engineers and fancy other degrees when their high school graduation scores were less 40%. Ahmed runs around the neighbourhood and tells everyone that he is doing aeronautical engineering when in fact, it is an introduction course and there are no assessments involved. Next semester, he is enrolled in a Bio-Tech course. My grandmother could do these courses. The lies, fake pride and the rest of Halima J mentioned could be traced to the nomadic view of the self. Ma anigoo laandheer ah ayaan shaqooyinkaasi qaban. In few years time, he will be driving cabs or Uber and lying to his teeth for welfare assistance:

@VixR

The Norwegians have a softer spot for single mothers and pay them a decent income to raise their children properly and with dignity. Australia doesn’t pay that amount but there other perks they receive. For example, every new mother was paid $7000 (don’t know if they stopped it becaus the poor kept having more kids and they were targeting young professionals). Schools grants for families on welfare. Free medicare and half-price for medication. Etc.
