Did your parents plan to permanently or temporarily settle outside Somalia when the civil war erupted? How was your parents experience as refugees?

How was your parents experience when they first settled in their new country? There wasn't an established Somali community when Somalis settled in Europe, North America, and Australia. What were some of the challenges your parents faced? What communities did your parents form friendships with to help them with the integration process?

There were a few Somalis living abroad before the Civil War. But the diaspora was not an established community in the 1990s.
My mum has some culture book about different groups in Bristol and somalis are in it but yeah the diaspora community that wasn’t established

They probably thought it was temporary, my parents were always open about their intentions to go back.

My dad would tell me about these muxaadaros they would have out of someones apartment when there were no Somali mosques. Dozens of immigrants in their 20's congregating in a random apartment to listen to a sermon in Somali, isn't it endearing?
