Did bears used to live in the somali regions?

The word madax kuti means bear right or am i wrong? But when did we have bears ?

I know it as oorso from italian so madax kuti must be a northern term. I saw this reddit comment that was kind of convincing saying madax kuti was a mythical creature and when somalis saw bears they thought it resembled it so they named it like that. There is support in dictionary
