Despite Ethiopian Airlines suspensions of flights to Eritrea, many Ethiopian Airlines planes heading to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia pass through Eritrea’s airspace, which is like preaching about water and drinking wine.
Although Ethiopian Airlines decided to suspend all flights to Asmara on September 2, 2024, the airline is still utilizing Eritrea’s airspace for many flights destined for Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. On Saturday morning, between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m., Ethiopian Airlines planes were observed flying from Addis Ababa to Istanbul (Turkey), Medina (Saudi Arabia), London (UK), Paris (France), Rome, Vienna (Austria), Brussels (Belgium), as well as flights arriving from Toronto (Canada), Amman, and Jeddah, heading to Ethiopia, all passing through Eritrea’s airspace.
This situation seems somewhat absurd. It is contradictory to declare a suspension of flights to Eritrea while continuing to use Eritrea’s airspace for other flights. Ethiopian Airlines openly announced the suspension of flights to Eritrea, even though they had until September 30 to resolve the dispute with Eritrea. Despite declining and halting flights to Asmara, Ethiopian Airlines are still utilizing Eritrea’s airspace. The airline has refuted allegations of overpricing tickets for Eritrean passengers, luggage theft, and discrimination against Eritrean passengers. Ethiopian Airlines stated that they have a standoff with Eritrea and cannot access their bank account in the country.
Nevertheless, many Ethiopian Airlines flights to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia continue to pass through Eritrea’s airspace, illustrating a situation of preaching water but drinking wine.
