Somali Americans and in particular the women are leading the way to integrate positively and contribute to the local society. Congratulations Mrs Deeqa Dhalac.

Dhalac, 52, is believed to be the first African-American and the first Muslim to be elected to the council, said Kathy DiPhilippo, a city historian.

I’m African-Australian and why can’t she be an African-American? I think the hyphenated version was for those whose parents hail from Africa.

Stay on course mate, don’t go overboard because derailment of this thread won’t be tolerated.

African-australian? That sounded too unnatural.

Somali-American is a much better choice, then african-american. Since that is always associated with black americans. :susp:

You are naming two continents like it means something. Just call yourself an australian, or somali-australian. Is it normal to say african-australian over there?

Compared to Europe or North America, there are few Africans in Australia and most Aussies wouldn’t have a clue if Somalia, Nigeria or Ghana are near Siberia or in the Far East. It’s easier to say African.

I’m quiet content identifying with as African Australian. That lady can identify with however she sees it fit. Is she an African American? Bloody oath, she is. She is in politics now and knows what’s best for her.

If you need more lessons about identity in Australia, please don’t derail this thread, start another thread and I will happily oblige to assist you.
