so as many of you know Yusuf bin Ahmad al-Kawneyn is known for bringing Islam to Maldives in Somali history, but it looks like they aren't the same person. both Moroccans and Somalis both claim him, but it looks like Yusuf isn't from either of their countries but he is from none other than Iran. let me show you some evidence:

Morroco and North Africa (apart from Egypt) are not Hanbalis, they’re predominantly Malikis. Hanbalis are only found in the Arabian peninsula (Saudi and Qatar for example are Hanbalis) and maybe some parts of Syria if i’m not mistaken.

Just because they are Shafii does not mean that it was the Somali that introduced Islam to them. It is more likely that it was yemeni traders from Hadramaut and other southern regions, with whom the Maldives used to trade for thousands of years, introduced Shafii Islam to them the same way they did to Somalia. Also the idea that somehow one man introduced a for them foreign religion like Islam to the Islands, converted their king and thats how the country became islamic is not plausible. It is more likely that as more and more traders visited the Islands it was probably the merchants and elites that first converted to the new religion and then in the 12th century after a gradual Islamization process a sizeable percentage of the population already was muslim and with that the buddhist king accepted Islam.
