Why did Ethiopia allow Afar region of Eritrea to join Eritrea during it's independence from Ethiopia? why did they not insist on Afar being part of Ethiopia. i Just don't get it.
in 1991 when the Derg were defeated, the Eritreans were the leader of the rebel movements so they could dictate terms. There is a weird consensus among western powers that the borders of Africa cannot be changed, so that's why Eritrea "re-declared" independence, since technically it had been independent and that independence was abrogated by Haile Selassie.
No new bonderies formed here, eritrea was an independent country before it united with ethiopia around 1950's and they just reclaimed their independence again in 1993 with their colonial borders
