All cultures have elements of ignorance and backward behaviour.
Take for instance the west. The west are cultured alcoholics. Western laymen spend so much of their hard earned money on liquor which they could have otherwise spent on purchasing a home (or second home) perhaps. So much public healthcare resources need to be allocated to fix this degenerate cultured custom.

As Somalis, what are ours? I know khat consumption is a big one that comes to mind. Another I think exists is the lack of sexual discipline. I see the lack of appreciation of how important cultivating our sexual energy is as Somali men. This is further worsened by a polygamous faith which encourages it. This in my opinion contributes to the lack of ambition as a lot of Somali men see marriage and sex as their life long preoccupation and give little thought to leaving behind a legacy to be proud of. Another is FGM. FGM supporters say it is done to protect women from rape. But isn't FGM in of itself a form of sexual assault or abuse against the young girls which it is performed on? Just imagine what a young Somali girl must be feeling having her private parts touched by other people, performed on, and then having to endure the pain of FGM in silence. I guarantee you she probably feels utterly violated. All these customs are done on a large scale in our communities (maybe not in the diaspora but certainly back home) and it contributes in great measure to our societal stagnation and even degeneracy.
Can you list others and are you optimistic about a future where Somalis may one day overcome these great internal backwardnesses?
