Cool Story

Leonid Rogozov was the only surgeon in a base among twelve people in Antarctica when he suddenly got acute appendicitis. There were no other doctors around, the matters were very urgent—he couldn’t wait. Moreover, the weather conditions caused problems with transportation, a recurring thing on that continent. He had two choices; A) either wait for someone who would never come in time and die; B) or risk his life to do a self-surgery, with admirable courage the young surgeon made the latter choice and succeeded with great, arduous effort.

Something about this made an impression on me. What it took to undergo the operation are character traits I apply in my life, in context, of course — the resilience, discipline, resolve, professionalism, etc. — are things each and every one of us could use more of.
