CIA: Israel participation in the Somali Civil war

Also interesting from the file is how Ethiopia used SPDF force to target Somalis forces in the Galbeed.

"Yusuf's forces have been used by the Ethiopians in limited combat against Somali guerrillas--the Western Somali Liberation Front (WSLF)--in the Ogaden and have conducted minor harassment in the border area of northern Somalia."

PS: Please don't derail thread based.

There was no relationship with that nation. Ethiopia was receiving military assistance and millions in weapons from them. Ethiopia also provided some early support for rebel groups. This doesn't mean Somalis were directly getting help from šŸ‡®šŸ‡±.

CIA would have mention that, it's not so surprise for Somali opposition to have had connection and support from Israel, this is something that country is known for, they are involved in everywhere.
We destroyed ourselves. We need to take accountability and stop blaming others for our own failures.
This post was no way posted to blame Israel, but to acknowledge the support it gave to Somali opposition to the barre Era.

You're conflating different things. Ethiopia receiving weapons and support from them which in turn also helped Ethiopia support rebel groups does not mean there was a direct connection. You cannot find any actual link between them.

This is like conspiracy theory level, it doesn't even make sense for them to have any actual interest in Somalia to interfere.

"The participants at the Addis Ababa session will include longtime political exiles and military officers involved in the coup attempt against Siad last April. The political members of this group formed the core of the Somali Democratic Action Front, a political organization that has received limited support from Ethiopia and Israel."

I don't think you read the text, cause it clearly says Somali Democratic Action Front got support from both Ethiopia and Israel, meaning a direct connection between Somalis opposition and Israel.

Alliances, Ethiopia at the time was pro Soviet, and Israel needed a group that was willing to work with them in the Horn of Africa. Adding Somalia is part of the Arab league.

Believe what you want, I don't even care. You cannot find a direct link, just random assumptions and tinfoil hat conspiracies. Might as well go further, the whole world was involved toošŸ˜„.

I wouldn't even call it a civil war, it was more accurately a proxy conflict. All those groups mentioned were proxies.

I already made thread on this how their support for Ethiopia and their destabilization efforts against Somalia is an extension of their Greater Isreal agenda and weakening arabi/muslim political unity

and here is an article that investigates Isreals involvement.

What is so hard about acknowledging this and how is it some conspiracies? If you can't trust a direct link documented by the CIA, i don't think you would trust anything.

FYP: Israel is known to participate in different wars around the globe including in Africa, Asia and In the Americans.

"Since then, the list of countries Israel has supplied, trained and advised includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela."

Proxies kulaha. It's very dishonest to reduce groups fighting an authoritarian regime down to just being a proxy. For many there were legitimate grievances that inspired their fight. Just because they took foreign support does not just make them only a proxy. Every civil war has different actors with different motives.

They were proxies. Ethiopia itself classified them as such in their military archives.

Ethiopian intelligence referred to the SNM and SSDF as Project 6A and Project 6B.

I broke all this down in a different thread.
The SSDF wasn’t founded out of some moral outrage over clan targeting that’s revisionism. It was created in Ethiopia after the failed 1978 coup, when the officers fled and were embraced by the Derg regime.

Ethiopia formally classified SSDF and SNM as Project 6A and 6B in their military-intelligence archives. These were not nationalist resistance movements they were proxy groups, strategically used by Ethiopia to destabilize Somalia from within

This part here too:
The SSDF leadership itself was manipulated and restructured directly by Colonel Moges, an Ethiopian officer, who even removed Abdullahi Yusuf unilaterally. If you're supposedly leading a Somali liberation group and you’re being appointed and dismissed by Ethiopian colonels you are not a sovereign force, you're a client.

You can argue back and forth all day, but if it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck , it’s a duck.

SSDF, SNM, etc. were proxy groups because they were created, trained, funded, and commanded by foreign powers. They didn’t just accept help , they were built to serve outside agendas.

ā€œLegitimate grievances,ā€ kulaha.
Tell that to the choir . I’m sure they’ll be moved.

And seriously, what kind of civil war has an opposition that’s headquartered outside the country, fails to rally any serious domestic support, and functions entirely at the mercy of its foreign sponsors?

SNM was not created by Ethiopia beenta iska jooji

Did Ethiopia fund the SNM to destabilize Somalia ? Yes.
Did Ethiopia create it ? No.

There is a big difference, the relationship SNM had with Derg was that of mutual benefit.

During apartheid, the ANC received support and help from various nations. It had members and HQ in different countries. We're they also a proxy😱
