I can tell Canadian Somalis by their accent it's crazy, even other Canadians can tell
Not really. Where did you get this? The fobs who learn English have an accent but non-fobs don’t have an accent unless they’re hood kids

The fact that I live down under and that sh*t is the only Canadian accent I could readily recognise speaks to how bizarrely it stands out.
It is very niche and limited to urban communities in the Greater Toronto Area. It was popularized through entertainers and social media.

I think people pay attention to what negatively stands out. IMO it is misleading. I don't wish to come off as pretentious but I don't understand it and feel like its an outgrowth of a dialect that is more common in certain youth from ethnic communities/urbanites. Toronto slang does not sound as interesting as slang from NY or the Bay Area (Cali). From what I gather Toronto slang seeks to borrow from America too. I don't know how mainstream it has become as I don't hear it outside of YT or socials. Few are imitating Toronto slang outside of Toronto. However, Americans export their colloquialisms and music/influence elsewhere and it catches on.

Fully agree with your analysis. I think for foreigners outside of North America where we tend to conflate US and Canadian accents with each other, the way Toronto slang sounds like it borrows from exotic immigrant groups more than sprouting organically (like how cadaan people in Texas have their own sayings) and has resulted in the incorporation of Jamaican (similar to London) plus East African slang words makes it more recognisable because those immigrant groups exist every else in the Anglosphere.

Me hearing that "Wallahi" and "Miskiin" have become a part of the Toronto lexicon is probably the best example of what I'm getting at as a Somali myself living all the way in Australia.

To the untrained ear no one will notice a difference between the Standard American accent and what you hear in Canada. Unless it is a distinct regional accent which clearly stands appart. In Canada, Nova Scotian and Quebec accents maybe a bit more pronounced. Than say, Inland, West Coast or Eastern Ontarian accents. Also, Toronto has its own slang referenced as Metropolitan Toronto Slang popularized by Drake. It sounds horrible and is influenced by immigrant populations from East Africa, the Middle East and Caribbean. There are more accents in the US than Canada. Think Texan, Cajun, Midlands, Boston, various permutations of the African American Venacular AAV, Chicano, Midwestern, Hawaiian, Pacific Northwest, Maine etc.

Toronto accent is mixed with Jamaican slang and London multicultural slang. A lot of Americans clown and mock their accent and the way they speak and call the accent artificial and fake.
