It is true though. The politicians know recognition will never come but like to play along with the tune and mislead the civilians.

That is on the exterior (showboating) but behind closed doors Somaliland needs the approval of the Somalia government for things
like the base and the port. Why do you think Somaliland politicians were trying to meet with Farmaajo (already posted by Africa
Intelligence)? You have to be realistic. If Somaliland was truly independent and not a federal
state then they wouldn't need the approval of the recognized government of Somalia.

If the Somalia government gave approval for the deal then why are they against it claiming it violates their sovereignty?

They allowed the deal to happen but once it was signed now they're against it. :what1:

They are against it that is why Somaliland politicians went to them in the first place (first Saudi Arabia then Addis Ababa). Somalia
Gov has a stake in big deals that go on in Sland. It is currently being debated in the parliament.

The deal is signed. There's nothing to debate about it now.

If Somalia had any power to cancel the deal then the UAE wouldn't have signed it.

The base isn't. That is what they are debating about from what I gather. Somalia doesn't
have a complete power now but its signature matters (since Somaliland is not a country but a
region part of Somalia in the eyes of the international community). Even the national
newspaper owned by UAE called it a federal region in regards to when they were talking
about the port investment.

How much money did SL earn from the port every year before the UAE deal?

They're complaining about both the port and the base. UAE already signed a MOU for the military base and they didn't bother to ask for Somalia's signature either.
All this is showboating to make it seem that the government in Somalia is actually doing something. If they really cared about fixing the country they should focus on freeing all that agricultural land controlled by Al Shabab so people wouldn't starve to death.

Somalia can and probably will take the UAE to court if it pushed ahead with the base without the consent of parliament.

You would think Somalilanders would familiarize themselves with sovereignty and what it entails lol
Somalia is a joke of a country, but it is a SOVEREIGN country. It has very large legal powers, and blocking a base from being established on its soil without its approval. The UAE probably thinks it can bully the FGS into accepting the base deal, but they fully understand that they can lose their shirts if the matter ever came to court.

Lol this isn't Puntland, Somalilanders know what sovereignty is. We just don't recognize Somalia's sovereignty over Somaliland which is why we made the deal with the UAE unilaterally.

Lack of funds didn't stop Somalia to take Kenya to court over the sea boundaries. They can also take the UAE to court if they want to.

The real reason Somalia wouldn't want to take it to court is because then the legal status of Somaliland will come into question.

The government in Somalia knows that their legal claim over Somaliland is weak so their tactic has always been to avoid having to deal with Somaliland and hoping it'll eventually collapse on its own.

But now that Somaliland is signing deals with other nations as a defacto state, the pressure is now on Somalia to do something or else be seen as forfeiting their claim to sovereignty.

I'm very interested in seeing how things will develop

:westbrookwtf:
The reason why the current administration is against the deal is because they had no say in it because the deal was already signed by the PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION. Towards the end of Hassan Sheikh Mahamoud's term as the president of the country in 2016, he gave the go ahead for the berbera port concession and military base. As soon as Mr Famaajo steped into the office in Feburary 2017, everything had already been signed off, which is why they are against it. This is what @Duke of Bohol means by "show boating" they use this quite go ahead by Sheikh Hassan Mahamoud to show off and say how they signed it off themselves (obvious horseshit) to appeal to their gullible population. And reading your comment you seem to be one of them :manny:

If everything has been signed off by the previous administration then it's a done deal. :drakelaugh:
Previous agreements must be honored by the present administration. If deals can be signed by one president only to be cancelled by the next president then what's the point of doing it in the first place? :mjlol:

It's either they agreed to the deal or not. You can't just change your mind. :camby:

It's not a done deal as far as i know, the question of the military base is still being debated. But as far as the Berbera port concession that has been signed off. As earlier commenters have said, if FGS goes to court over the military base then they have a very good chance of blocking the deal.

Previous agreements must be honored by the present administration

Hassan Sheikh's admin did not discuss this with others. It's was not really an agreement that was debated in the Somali parliament at all. Somalia has incredible legal jurisdiction over Somaliland and it's was evident in the deal. :kanyeshrug:
