I think it's more so with them being lowkey uneducated regarding islam? Like most somalis can memories the quran fully but they cannot understand it. My morrocan teacher at mosque used to always tell me to actually learn Arabic fluently if not I am going to constantly rely on poor translation or other people's interpretation.

I personally don't believe in islam due to spiritual reasons, but I do agree with my teacher if you don't know what you're reading you can easily be misinformed.

I think we just need a chinese style patriotic education campaign that came with the chinese revolution (not uighur style re-education camps), where we instill Somali values and foster national self esteem and pride. Along with it teach & emphasize on Somali history & culture, so much so that it becomes a "shame" to claim being Arab (unless you have direct ties). Being muslims should never be conflicted with imitating Arabs too. Promoting a Somali identity, will also make the future generations less qabyalaad-centered, and put the national pride first above all. Look at China today, most identify more with being chinese over their ethnicity.
