House Committee Chairs Push State Dept. to Distinguish Somaliland, Counter Chinese Influence

Republican chairmen of two key House committees dedicated to confronting the Chinese Communist Party are urging the State Department to issue a separate travel advisory for Somaliland.

In a letter addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and provided exclusively to Breitbart News ahead of its release, Congressman John Moolenaar (R-MI), chairman of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, and Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ), chairman of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, called for a separate travel advisory for Somaliland, describing it as a “concrete and immediately actionable step” that would shape commerce, investment, and international perception while reinforcing U.S. support for a democratic partner.

The United States government, including the State Department, has not made any formal distinction with respect to Somaliland in its travel advisories. While certain lawmakers have merely suggested that the Secretary of State consider doing so, such a measure were it ever to be adopted officially would merely acknowledge that one region within a country may be comparatively more stable or secure than another. It would not, in any way or form. imply dejure recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, nor constitute a shift in the United States’ official position on the matter. The US still believes in the one Somalia poilicy
