A female World Cup official has fled Qatar due to the threat of facing 100 lashes and a seven-year jail term for 'extramarital sex', despite reporting she was raped.
Paola Schietekat, 28, lodged a complaint with Qatari authorities on June 6, 2021, accusing one of her associates of breaking into her home before raping and threatening to kill her.
The Mexican official had been working for the World Cup organising committee and was shocked when she was charged with engaging in 'extramarital sex' by authorities who deemed she had had an affair.
Schietekat is due to face trial on March 6 but has already fled the country.
According to the Mail, she was told by lawyers that one loophole to get round the charges would be to marry her alleged attacker.
In an article on Julio Astillero, she claims she had left her door unlocked - like many others do in Doha - when the alleged attacker - who she regarded as a friend - burst into her home whilst she was sleeping and raped her.
Schietekat was left covered in multiple bruises to her upper body and took pictures on her phone to detail the incident.
After spending the night in a hotel through fear of her assailant returning, she then obtained a medical certificate the following morning before reporting the incident with local police with a request to press charge.
She had also signed a statement in Arabic, despite having limited grasp of the language, while accompanied by a representative from the Mexican consul in Qatar.
But she was later summoned back to the station that evening alone where she was confronted with her alleged attacker, who insisted to police they were in a consensual relationship.
Officers demanded to look at Schietekat's phone and for her to take a virginity test, before charging her with having extramarital sex.
The case was then sent to the public prosecutor's office with charges against her.
