at what age does it get embarrassing to not know your language

I think Af Hooyo mataalo gets worrisome after the age of 17. Due to being in a house hold of people how speak Somali fluently ie your parents. After the age of 17 most people tend to go to college and you wont speak Af Somali for a while and you will tend to forget some words. Now imagine if you can't speak Af Somali but you can understand what would happen if you start forgetting words in Af Somali? This is the point when it become embarrassing which is around the age of 21

I don’t think we should shame people or make them feel embarrassed. I don’t know what a lot of Somali parents and people back home who are the ones who shame Hooyo matalos expect. A person who was born and raised in the UK or America spends more than 8 hours in a non Somali environment speaking ONLY English.

On top of that, since a lot of Somali families tend to have a lot of children, a lot of mothers allow their kids to watch hours of English speaking kids shows to give them time to clean the house or prepare meals. A lot of Somali kids are loud and run around the house. Sticking an iPad in front of them calms them down. I know it’s not the best parenting, but I can sympathize. How else are they going to get there chores done when they have 6 energy filed kids?

Hence, children are being exposed to English for more than 13 hrs a day when you combine schooling, TV shows and social media, the fact that they often speak to their siblings in English and the fact that are living in English speaking countries so when they go out, they’re communicating with the general masses in English. Therefore, they hardly have enough time to build their Somali language skills. It’s not as if Somali mothers and fathers on average are sitting there tutoring their child Af Somali or taking them to Somali classes.

To summarize my argument: How can we expect kids to pick up Af-Somali and be ultra fluent in a time when kids spend more time at school than at home and at a time in which children are only exposed to English speaking media, have English speaking friends and the list continues.

To all the young hooyo mataalos, don’t feel shame. It’s positively idiotic for Fobs and the older generation of Somalis to expect a different outcome. The next step as a community is to maybe create Somali schools because the situation is only going to get worse.

No look at the arabs, Asians and other ethnics in western nations they can speak their language well but why is it somalis? It's not the person's issue it's the country. You see how all these other ethnics can speak their language well? It's cause of many factors but it's mainly cause they got a NATION that they can go back to but for somalis all we have back home is a large stinking pile of shit and nothing to go back to cause it's either exploded or squatters have take over it.

My father knew a guy back them during the peace times and this guy was a rich man and his kids went to many places like Europe, America etc. And grew up with foreign languages and foreign education BUT those kids could still speak their language well why? Because they had a godamn country to go back to whenever they pleased and guess the shocking thing after when everything went to hell and the guys business got bankrupt, his properties destroyed and looted that guys kids (my dad keeps in contact sometimes) that guys grand kids lived in the west just like us and guess what they cannot speak a BIT of Somali why? I will stress it again cause they had no country to go back to or lean back on.

You must be suicidal for wanting to argue with @Angelina

She always thinks her takes through so thoroughly that whoever attempts to refutes her gets karbaashed into oblivion.

Many Arab kids go to Arabic classes during the weekend and a lot of Pakistani kids struggle with their language as well. They’re not better than Somalis. In fact, you get more white washed people in their communities, despite the fact that Pakistanis in the UK have literally dominated whole cities in Britain with places like Bradford being a mini Islamabad.

No I am presenting my own opinion to her opinions that may or not expand her opinions on this.

Yeah that's true but that's a minority, all the Arab and other ethbic peoples I have met who live in the west could speak their tongue fluently why? Because their country is stable and they have things they can go back to.

In Canada you will come across a lot of people born and raised here, well into their 20’s who don’t know how to speak Somali.

I don’t blame them. It’s the parents and community’s fault.

Other cultures have language schools for their young generation growing up in the west so they can stay connected to their culture and learn their language fluently. The Somali community is too disorganized to ever come up with such a thing.
