It's true that in some Muslim countries wearing the veil is enforced alongside the general mistreatment of women but the veil in and of itself is not an instrument of oppression but merely associated with oppression. That is where the confusion lies.

So, in my opinion, the criticism from western men and women towards Muslim women saying that these women are "oppressed" because they wear it shows a lack of understanding and knowledge on their part.
