Another humiliating day as a diaspora male in the West

My poor understanding of the Somali language has once again embarrassed me in the worst ways. I and my Hooyo were ringing up items in a Somali own convenience store the shop keep initiated some small talk. He asks the standard question "Is this your son? How old is he? is he going to college?". Then he shifted the conversation to me I struggle to say anything coherent. He realized that I couldn't speak Somali and begin his integration by asking why this was the case. As excuse after excuse poured out, I notice he was smiling even laughing a little. He took pleasure in my lack of dhaqan then I was able to clearly see his sadistic nature. When we were through with this ordeal I was very bitter I complained to my Hooyo about the state of my dhaqan. I coped a little and said he was just rude because he was short. No joke his head was barely taller than the table he deals on. Could any of you tell me a resource to learn Somali online perhaps something of quality if possible?

I'm looking to improve in a way that spares me from confrontation with a teacher of some sort. Something automated would be great.

I was looking for something with ease of access. I am starting to think the only why is to go back home at this point but, that would likely be 100x more embarrassing.

Yeah it might be embarrasing but it will be worth it. Sometimes you need to put yourself in hard situations in order to learn.

It's good that you're really motivated and wanna learn your mother language, you're almost there walaal.

I agreed what Vanessa said but I've to add that you ask your family to talk to you only in Somali language, and you communicate every Somali that you know only in Somali. You will make mistakes, and some people may even laugh at you but don't let that discourage you. Keep practicing soon you'll notice the improvement and you won't be afraid to strike a conversation in Somali.

Somalis are the least polite people ever. Instead of just switching it to English he laughed at you. Dhib malahan bro you will learn the language no time if you just put effort into it.

It would appear you are in dire need of dhaqan celis or cultural rehabilitation. A few months every year will do wonders for your dhaqan and language skills

Go to Somalia and then watch Hindi Filim with af Somali, I completely understand Somali and it’s vast vocabulary, and the talking got better in 2 months, languages is very hard to talk if your not talking everyday

I learned here in the states, all you have to do is tell your family to speak to you only in Somali. They key to this is make sure they correct you in the rudest manner, that way you’ll regret making that same mistake.

I just googled learn Somali online and a bunch of resources came up. The ones I would personally use if I needed them are the books written by Somalis, videos by Somalis (or decent non-Somalis) and apps that have decent amount of vocabulary…

You won’t know what’s quality out there till you sample the different resources for yourself. Get a good Somali dictionary too. I have a pdf version of the afmaal one and it helps me when I need it. There are also a bunch of Somali written books available online that you can practice and learn from.

You won’t feel how much you have improved until you interact with people. They will be able to tell the difference if they knew you from before. You want to reach a point where you talk so natural they don’t take notice anymore.
