India used to always be rich and had around 30% of the world's wealth concentrated in India before they where colonised by the British empire who basically destroyed the Indian economy to fuel there own industrial revolution putting themselves at the top of the world mainly through sucking India dry. By India I meant the Indian subcontinent which is right now made up of India/Pakistan/parts of Afghanistan/Bangladesh/sri Lanka etc. It's very diverse especially on religious grounds look at it like the horn. The Sikhs where basically the biggest out of the minority groups so they kept getting beat down by the Hindus and muslims while the Muslims where beating down on all of them but for the most part the Hindus would fight back. When the brits came they played divide and conqueror by playing India's political issues against them and used the Sikhs hatred for the big two to make them join the brits. It's the same thing that happened to the aztecs in America when the Spanish came. They only beat the aztec because they teamed up with all the small guys who hated the aztecs as foot soilders to "liberate" them against there evil overlords not knowing that all they where doing was passing on the reins onto new management that they helped get rid of all possible competition.


As for your question Indian culture revolves around the caste system and the only people somewhat immune to this where the Muslims but they where a minority in India. So they where seen as a threat whilst the other groups adhered to the caste system and the caste system is kind of about colour and class so the brits used it to there advantage placing themselves at the top. This lead to these Indians basically falling over themselves to serve the brits who they saw as superior to themselves. Also the Sikhs where know as renown warriors so match that with love for white people made them the perfect lap dog and cannon fodder for the British army to throw about around the world especially if there are millions of them at your disposal.
