The rate of childlessness among women who have passed their childbearing age is 35% in Hong Kong!!! Japan won't have a population in 100 years time ( they are too xenophobic to bring in immigrants) and around 40% of Chinese population would be seniors in two decades, they have bottomed out their workforce. With the looks of it, Africa would probably be supplying the worlds labour force. Why is this? I have a couple of theories...again, a theory y'all....don't fight me on this.
And please feel free to add on to this.
1. The expectations around schooling in places like Korea and China is excessive. These kids spend 12 hours a day in school prepping for a college entrance exam, stress through college to get into the extremely competitive labour force. Both men but especially women are scared to jeopardize their position they worked their whole life towards and take time off work to raise a family. These countries have a toxic work-life balance. They also weirdly kept this traditional idea that women should keep the same housewife duties from before but also hustle among the men at work. It won't work, something has to give. Western countries are even finding a better balance.
2. Japan- the hermit nation. As much as we thought that the liberalization around pre-marital sex would open the flood gates of zina. Japanese men and women are not having sex, infact a-lot of them are not even dating. I don't know if their hormones are all jacked up - maybe from the excess p0rn consumption. Their lives are school, work, home, online?? They make great workers but not a great/healthy nation. The now deceased president- Shinzo Abe put hundreds of millions of dollars into incentivizing a baby boom through free childcare, maternity leave and a whole lot of propaganda. Sadly, the vitality of the land of the rising sun has been depleted, I'm sorry adeero but your work has been to no avail.
3. Urbanization: it has been shown that people who live in urban areas do not give birth to as much children compared to those in rural areas. East Asian countries are extremely urban ie high rise apartment living, populations concentrated in mega cities etc. Although, China's rural population has a low tfr. ( I think its the exception after these godless sagajaans harassed and imposed a devastating one-child policy on Chinese women, even going to the extent of forced sterilization. Resulting in a massive female infanticide - in the millions , all because the parents placed their best bets on male children.) Apologies for going on a tangent- this issue just irks me.
What is also interesting is that in "wealthier countries" - the top wealthiest people ( the ownership class) and the poorest have the most children. The middle class which is trying to maintain a certain lifestyle, cannot keep up and a lot of folks would rather have less kids, or none, than jeopardize the little wealth they have. There are predictions of the disappearance of the "middle class" - which was a phenomena of the last 150 years coinciding with the creation of massive amounts of wealth in the world. In the future, we might find ourselves in the plutocrat / working class dynamic, this time with more technology and a higher living standard ( in the material sense)
In short, I don't know if we have the solutions, unless we want to intentionally live with less.
