If I remember correctly, he asked his friend to make an alibi for him around Hae's time of death, before he even found out that Hae was dead.

Why need an alibi if you didn't murder someone?

His lawyer was going through a cancer that would kill her right after the trial. In the podcast it is showed that she was completely incompetent at that point in her life. She just wanted to earn a pay check and thus letting this dude get hammered with steep prison sentence.
