Hello guys

I have a proposal (i dont know if its original or whatever) and I'd like you to tell me what the problems with it are.
As a solution to the greater Somalia question I propose a...

SOMALI UNION - a EU style political and economic union with a single market, customs union, borderless freedom of movement, possibly with a single currency and a NATO style security arrangement between sovereign somali states.

1. This would initially start with the FGS recognizing and sponsoring the international recognition of Somaliland as a sovereign state (as I believe this the only way sland will get recognition anyway)

2. A federal Somali Republic and the unitary Republic of Somaliland would join the SU.
SU institutions would be split amongst member states:
*SU central bank
*SU parliament
*SU commission
*SU courts of Justice etc.

3. As part of it's irredentist claims the SU would then accept other SOMALI states such as Djibouti and then sponsor the autonomous/ independence movements(ideally non-violent and political) in other SOMALI regions and make those sovereign states and members of the SU.

4. We could have observer states like Yemen and others with significant somali minorities excluding Ethiopia and kenya

This would be the most likely way that a greater Somalia would be achieved in this day and age i.e. through political means. This also has the advantage of creating more somali majority states and as a bloc we would have more influence in international institutions.

The capital for the Greater Somali Republic should be rotated between Djibouti, Hargeisa & Mogadishu until a new capital city is built from scratch.

It should be somewhere central and able to support a large population. (ie near good farmland and steady water supply.)

My suggestion is to build the capital a few km north of Baladweyne on the Shabelle river.

You’re clearly bias cause you’re Isaac that why you mention the tribal Isaac entity somaliland to get recognition what’s so special about Isaac?

You fail to realise that somalia had a civil war Isaac ethnically cleansed many people from sool and sanaag who are a different race darood.

Every federal state is based on tribe there’s no way in hell Isaac will govern darood tribe who they despise and refer to as faqash sure they can people a few dhulbhante here or there for their loyalty but the question remains how long can they keep paying a few dhulbhante to remain loyal to Isaac? As soon as the money runs out then a faqash has to do what a faqash has to do may Allah bless jaale siad barre and grant him paradise amiin

Mogadishu can’t be the capital city cause the tribes there have looted Somalis homes and lands likewise hargaisa can’t be the capital city cause the tribes there have looted the homes and lands of Somalis before the civil war and djbouti can’t be the capital cause it has a military base there French British the United States all have their troops there it’s a red light district for those troops that’s why there’s so many brothels and bars night clubs prostitutes there I have been there so and was amazed what I have seen half the airport is occupied by foreign troops it’s a military base.

I agree that a Brasillia style new capital might be good but what about a south africa/ EU style system which is decentralised and the institutions are split up like between luxembourg/brussels/strasbourg/hague

And a SU could therefore utilise 2nd or 3rd tier cities and not the capitals and make sure institutions are spread equally among member states, helping those cities aswell

It would be a good solution but the logistics and costs would be immense in the long run. We have a large territory so a luxembourg/brussels/strasbourg/hague solution would not work.

Also a city built by all Somalis would bring a sense of pride and unity. :noneck:

Or we could just abandon tribalism and unite into one functioning country instead of primitive tribal states.

The reality is this:

- Somaliland will never join in another unitary state with Somalia be it federal, confederation etc.

- Somaliland can not be forced to join ethier. They have secured written security gurentees with both the UAE and Ethiopia.

- If threatened Somaliland has the ability and will to invade Garowe and annex Somalia territory creating another headache and humanitarian catastrophe that could plunge Somalia into another civil war. If garowe falls, puntland is gone. Hawiye will take North galkacyco.

- current situation is also a lose lose for both. Somalia is no closer to independent security, the development remains primairly focused around foreign owned installations like ports and airports. Alshabab is still a formidable foe and Somaliland loses millions of dollars to UAE and Ethiopia and is not able to meet its full objectives of becoming a self sufficient nation due to one sided trading arrangement because of its status.

Alternative:

1. Somaliland and Somalia mutually recognise each other as separate nations with the condition that Somaliland become a neutral partner in organising and chairing a long term peace betweens the warring tribes. Also Somaliland becomes responsible for training and establishing effective security forces for Somalia along with training a judiciary.

Once the two states settle and develop both should leave the AU, Arab league and Igad focusing instead on a Islamic socialist model of governance. Creating a single currency and mutual defence pacts with Djibouti.

Then we should invest heavily on modernising both our industries, economies and militaries.

Unrealistic proposal , if Somalia were to recognize Somaliland other regions would simply seek independence. It would lead to the death of Somalia and more Qabil bloodshed as they fight against each other for territory.

what makes you think somaliland will agree to this after we grant them their recognition?

also just seems entirely unrealistic. I am glad you want to bring peace to somali lands but that place is doomed.

i would be fine with this but also not realistic. most of somalia will never agree to recognising somaliland. need to get rid of clan system first. this clan pride bullshit is the biggest obstacle. once that is done then the rest of what you said is able to happen.
