probably would’ve won it had it not been for barre the madman. Why on earth did some major general who had no experience in conventional warfare get to lead and devise battle stratagem? How was overriding decisions of commanders who had experience and training under their belt. Retarded country

He was winning but he massively pushed his luck

Worst part is soviets told him not to enter the war and if he had waited until the collapse of the soviet union and derg he couldve easily taken it without a fight in 91'

Even worse, after taking most of Ogaden he tried pushing for more, and by that point if he accepted talks he couldve kept whatever he had conquered

There was far more to lose than to win and the loss was catastrophic for the country overall

Hindsight is 20/20. He had little choice at that point. He tried every negotiation with the Derg to get galbeed so when diplomancy didn't work, war was the only move left. And with the deteriorating situation in galbeed, he wouldn't have wanted to wait a whole 14 years to invade, especially since the Derg was in the middle of a civil war.

The Soviets betrayed Somalia earlier anyways when they and the Cubans suggested that crappy federation with Ethiopia.

I don't recall reading him doing that. The SNA stopped at Harar.

They were stopped at Harar, also he had plenty of problems back home to deal with, an invasion really shouldnt have been the top priority, who knows with a bit of patience you wouldnt be a goxoti today

We pushed our luck too far with that war, and Siad Barre's arrogance towards the Soviets was what really doomed us.

Imagine this from the Soviets perspective, you help train the army and elite soldiers of an impoverished pastoralist-agrarian based country, you give them technical expertise, aid them in setting up industry, and supply them with artillery, tanks, missiles, and fighter jets, turning them into the most potent fighting force on the continent. That country then decides to invade a neighboring communist ally after you told them not to, and not only that, they use the equipment YOU🫵 gave them to do it. When you think about it, they had a valid crashout with the crazy support they gave Ethiopia. It's like you raised a son that thinks he can step up to you when he becomes a teenager, they basically need to be shown their place. The way we were acting we essentially got too big for our boots.

Ultimately, this is why I believe it's necessary for Somalia to develop it's own military industrial complex. No more using other peoples stuff to defend ourselves, we need to produce our own artillery, missiles, tanks, navy ships, fighter jets, etc. All critical items in the supply chain should be manufactured locally. I’m talking about everything from the steel to the computer chips, no importing components just to assemble them. We need to be the ones exporting those components instead.

If we embark on this, it will give us some important economic and strategic benefits: It will create skilled high paying jobs in research and development, create even more jobs in production and sustainment. It will aid in industrial growth and create technical expertise, provide a new source of export revenue instead of importing such equipment, and make us self sufficient in defense, therefore helping us achieve true geopolitical autonomy.
