Biography of the Sheikh:

Sheikh Abdurahman Sh. Nur grew up in Borama, he was of the Reer Ugaas subclan of the Makayl-Dheere branch of the Gadabuursi Dir clan.[3] Growing up he was a Qur'anicteacher in the British Somaliland protectorate. His father Sheikh Nur was a well-known and notable figure and was a qādi for many years. He was a learned or knowledgeable man, in particular when it came to the history of his own clan, the Gadabuursi.[4] Sheikh'Abdurahman would later follow in his father's footsteps by also becoming a qādi, albeit of the entire northern British Somaliland region.[3]

In 1933, Nuur devised a quite phonetically accurate new orthography for transcribing the Somali language. While the script enjoyed considerable currency in his hometown, the Sheikh harbored no illusions as to its widespread adoption, writing in a publication of his wherein he employed the script itself that "I publish it here with no intention of attempting to contribute to the already abundant confusion in the choice of a standard orthography for Somali".[3]

Didn’t Somalis have their own Cushitic calendar?

It wasn't a Cushitic calendar but actually developed by ancient Somalis themselves. The Somali calendar is based on both the solar and lunar calendric systems. The calendar was used by farmers and herders to determine the weather and seasons, it helped them in their needs. The Somali solar calendar is known as "Amin-tiris" or "shin-tiris" while the lunar calendar was known as "dayax-tiris".

This wasn't part of the Somali calender but Somali sailors were aware of the region's monsoons, and used them to link themselves with the port cities of the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. They also developed an understandable way of defining the islands of the Indian Ocean in their navigational reach. They would name archipelagos or groups of islands after the most important island there, from the Somali point of view.

Basically, our ancestors were always sophisticated and knew how the f*ck the world works. :nvjpqts:
