Mehr is an obligatory part of the deen - it is Somali culture that has reduced it to a transaction.

It represents the first gift a husband gives to his wife, not a purchase where the money goes to her family

In Somali dhaqan, you only pay mehr after divorcing. What you get before the marriage is called Sayuuto if im not wrong which is abit of gold.

Also if you married with family approval, you will receive help even after you divorced, like who the hell thinks about divorce before even getting married :drakewtf:

Expensive mehr causes corruption in society and makes zina easy. The Prophet's daughters mehr wasn't even $500 and the mehr is a gift, not insurance money :francis:

Somali culture is haraam then. The mehr should be paid in full to your wife up front

The original Somali culture was that you would give her family and tribe a separate amount of money as a gift, but her mehr is separate, hers and hers alone, and is protected by God

Well the issue with those men isn’t the mehr they are sexist ass holes to begin with, mehr or not they are the type to abuse and use women. Anyone who thinks you can buy a human being with 5k is not someone you should be marrying.
