Jokes aside, it may be a bit awkward for you to try and help him if you're not close which could just result in him withdrawing so I'd suggest just trying to get him to go to a therapist. If he can take a break from education then he really should take it, no one should be studying in that condition.
Relationships are definitely not healthy in this state so it's best he doesn't get too involved with that lass. If you are close try talking with him and remember you're there to listen and suggest.
Personally I'd just get a cat if it was possible.

Well in my opinion. He’s old enough to make his decisions. As the upcoming PIXAR movie SOUL says live your life how you want it. We only live once. He should learn that being a doctor isn’t the only way to make money. He could be a traveller and see where he stands in this world like Nas Daily or Drew Binsky. Inshallah he’ll know what he wants. His parents may have a backwards mind on this situation, reach out to him and tell him that if he doesn’t want to do it he has to man up and face his fears. Not being a doctor doesn’t lead him to the streets

Well, there could be many situations on what is happening to him.
Does he want to come out but his parents aren’t that liberal towards that.
Has he left Islam
Is he on drugs
Is he in love with an ajnabi
Only Allah knows.
As for the depression part. You need to know on what he’s depressed about to take any further action.

Keep it between both of you guys and see if you can fix it. You don’t need to tell me as this is all my advice I can give. If you can’t fix it then seek some help. Also don’t trust your friends or family because a rumour can spread on what is happening.

Well I’ve seen a news article that states being gay comes from your environmental factors.
Tell him it’s haram to commit suicide and he will go to hell for that. Tell him it’s not worth it and fear Allah. Tell him how millions of people go through worse than him yet they still cope with their challenges. Tell him this world is a test from Allah so be patient and increase your worship.

Suicide is a major sin, and the one who does that is faced with a warning of eternity in the Fire of Hell, where Allaah will punish him with the means that he used to commit suicide.
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever throws himself down from a mountain and kills himself will be throwing himself down in the Fire of Hell for ever and ever. Whoever drinks poison and kills himself will be sipping it in the Fire of Hell for ever and ever. Whoever kills himself with a piece of iron will have that iron in his hand, thrusting it into his belly in the Fire of Hell for ever and ever.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5442) and Muslim (109),
It was narrated from Thaabit ibn Dahhaak (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever kills himself with something will be punished with it on the Day of Resurrection.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5700) and Muslim (110).
