So, I came across this video and it was talking about preserving masjid al-qiblatayn in saylac. This is the masjid that shows when Islam took roots in the Horn Africa and it dates back to the 7th century. There are two Qibla’s in this mosque one is facing Mecca the other is facing al-aqsa in Jerusalem. This is important because it signifies that Islam took root in the Horn of Africa before other Arab countries. It also tells us that when Prophet Muhammad Sallahu ‘alaihi wasallam got the revelation to face the qibla towards Mecca, people in Saylac also changed the masjid. Which means this is one of the oldest mosques in Islamic history and it starting to look this

and if you look at the first qibla the one facing Jerusalem. It almost gone and if it’s gone so is the history of when Islam took place in Saylac and how it spread to the Somali people.

The first masjid is in Massawa, Eritrea. Not first in the horn but first in the whole world. That's where the Hijra took place and the first Muslim comunity was founded.

@Barwaaqoforsomalia I've heard pretty recently that the masajid had unfortunately collapsed or something a few weeks ago. The Somaliland government has been restricting access to the area as of late so it's hard to verify. InshaAllah khair.

The Masjid al-Qiblatayn in Zaylac is the second oldest mosque in the world outside of Mecca after The Masjid of the Companions in Eritrea that @Waaqo of Punt mentioned. The one is Zaylac is unique in that it never really underwent any major upgrades or renovations and so, unlike other ancient mosques, the one in Zaylac maintained it's two qiblah

Bruh, that's a bunch of rubble. aint a whole lot to "preserve." Maybe 50 years ago this might have been a possibility.

Yh taking a closer look there's pretty much nothing left of the mosque. If it were to be restored it just wouldn't be the same mosque.

Makes u wonder, if it was such an old and important mosque why did it reach this point? Surely they would have at least tried to restore it....? Such conditions for the oldest mosque in SL is a true shame.

whilst in Rome u have Roman buildings which are still perfectly standing....

The mosque in Eritrea was completely redone much later with it's minaret not appearing until the 9th century (it has only one minaret). By that logic, the one in Zaylac again becomes the oldest actual mosque since it's unchanged and it still has two qiblah, regardless if it's crumbling now.

great, but I don’t really care about hierarchy of which mosque is the oldest in the East Africa. but I am talking about the mosque that holds significance to Somali Islamic history. The one in Zeila tell us when Islam took its roots with the Somali people. As you can see i said it’s one of the oldest in Islamic history not “the oldest or second or third or fourth” I said it tells us when Islam took roots in the Horn Africa because it’s one of the mosques in the Horn that was built during the prophets time. It’s not really a competition and I talked about it because it’s collapsing and because it’s an important historical masjid in Somalia. It doesn’t hold any significance to Eritrean or Ethiopian Islamic history but it holds significance in the Horn and in Somalia and that’s why I talked about it here.

Damn, if that’s true our history is turning into rubbles and then after a few years no one will know about it and then after that people would slowly start to revise the history of when Islam took its roots with the Somali people. At least we should use some of what’s left of it to rebuild a new one. I’ve seen some people in Europe renovate the historical building’s like this. I mean France is restoring its Norte Dame church after the fire

Agreed. Not sure if they're renovating it, investigating, or trying to restrict access so that there isn't any further damage, but regardless, it should have never gotten to this degree of disrepair in the first place. InshaAllah khair and good initiative on your part MashaAllah
