I'm currently thinking of going further in my degree, this is my last year and I've picked to do a minor in health promotion and my concentration will be FGM, from there god willing I'll will do my masters and PhD on FGM and open a centre in somalia/djbouti spreading awareness about the risks and side effects of FGM etc .

But I need to know if FGM is a big thing back home ? Before I waste another 10 years in university.

FGM is the biggest if not one of the most pressing concern back home and it is still practiced, even up until now. Your research/degrees will help a lot of unfortunate souls. It is a good thing!

Don't waste your time on trying convince a whole nation of naago somali to stop that

Become a marriage counselling expert and save Somalis in the western diaspora from self-destruction and it might also help you in not joining the garoob statistics. Or, a mental health care worker. According to the World Health Organisation, 30% of Somalis suffer from some sort of a mental illness, ooops, sorry for being insensitive there, got carried away.

Talk to someone who already has a PhD and they will tell you the pros and cons

A masters is difficult
A PhD is a whole different beast I’m told

One thing I'm scared of is getting killed doing my job. Some people will think I'm brainwashing them and bringing western culture to their land..

Go for it walaal. What ever you think is best for your future career make sure to look at the type of jobs this could potentially give you and the pay for those jobs. FGM is a relevant issue in our country and people invested in ending it are great in my books.

Sounds typical to me of a Somali girl to always address the flaws in Somali culture and get a degree with it lol but countering FGM is good.

She could work in Djibouti until Somalia’s security becomes good enough. Yeah I’d be worried in working in Somalia tbh, the people who are supposed to protect you could possibly even do disturbing things to you if given the chance. I’m saying this since OP is a female. It’s always best to assume the worst back home.
