He was likely a Habesha or Oromo.
Definitely not habesha. He was picked up in Southern Ethiopia and got converted to Islam. He was either an Oromo pagan or barya slave. It's impossible for a habesha Christian to get enslaved like that lol.

It was definitely rare for a Habesha Christian to become a slave at that time. He could potentially have been Omotic as well.
Many historical documents lazily describe any slave coming from Abysinnia vaguely as a "Abysinnian/Ethiopian slave" and omit the actual ethnic identity of the slave(s).
Yh that's so annoying. Arabs and Indohyars often described the whole horn as 'xabasha' or 'Ethiopian', even towards Somalis. 'Somali' is actually a much newer term compared to how Ethios were known (xabash, Ehiops, etc)

No. Somalis weren't seen as part of the land of Habesh. To outsiders, our land was called the land of the Berbers(Barbaria or Berbera).
Outsiders knew there were two distinct over-arching cultural groups in the Horn, the Christian Semitic-speaking Habeshas(Amharas, Tigrays etc) and the Muslim Hamitic/Cushitic-speaking Berbers(Somalis, Beja, Afars, Saho etc).

You're right but I remember some documents on a hiistorian n traveller that stated that the Somalis were also identified as Ethiopian by Ajnabis. It wasn't a huge docum,entation but for a time we were def bunched up with Ethios.

Of course some historical documents will cause confusion, but generally the Horn was always divided into those two main cultural zones.
