Sheeko sheeko sessions everynight with my mom and siblings. And we were never allowed to speak Finnish inside the house.

Alxamdulillah now im fluent in af-soomaali to the point I can easily change between dialects. Written language is little bit challenging but im getting the hang of it.

Speak the language even if you sound like a retarded 4 year old kid. The only way you learn it is by speaking it. Always imagine what you want to say in af soomaali first, even if you are having conversation with non Somalis.

Pfff it took me a year to speak intermediate Somali while in Djibouti but sadly It takes longer to write reading is easy.

My somali is at a good level but I still need to learn more. Sometimes I struggle to find the right words and i also refrain from using big words because it doesnt "sound like me."
I've noticed my finnish is on the decline because I dont read as much as I used to. My English is just growing stronger.

Also that cursed swedish has been bothering me. My french courses will start soon. Je ne comprends pas is all I'm saying.

The map of Somalia on the book cover included the island Socotra which is inhabited by non Somalis but claimed by some Somalis.

The fastest way to learn a language is to expose your brain to the language as much as possible so that it can create the neurons to quickly understand it.

That's why immersion learning is the most effective (living in the country).

Another way to do this is something I call deep immersion.

Where you replace passive immersion (just watching or listening to media or people) with actively carrying out work that takes up all your concentration for hours every day.

One example might be to rewrite a Somali conversation you hear in a YouTube video or a chapter in a Somali book on any interesting topic in your own words instead of word for word copying it.

This forces your brain to create stronger connections and brand the vocabulary and grammar into a neural network for Somali in your brain much faster..


A couple weeks of doing this and you'll find it much easier to quickly transition your brain to the "Somali mode" whenever you talk in Somali....

That's the biggest issue the diaspora has with the language since their brain is always in "English mode" or whatever other language you speak natively there.


It'll build up like a muscle but just like muscles you'll need to keep it active by constantly practicing it or the neural network you built up will slowly lose connections and you'll have to start all over again.
