I know many Oromos, The Muslim ones who speak Somali are indistinguishable from us, had a neighbor with a family, he would always stop to talk to me in a strong galbeed accent. I had no idea until I saw the Oromia flag on his car but overall they are decent people and very welcoming too. :)

There aren’t many of them in Europe. It’s mainly Habesha and Somalis that came to Europe as refugees.

I met some Oromo in DC and they were speaking Somali! I guessed they claimed to be Somali on their asylum applications.

They have a weird obsession with Somalis, especially the ones back home. We caught out so many of them claiming to be Geri and Gurgure in Dire Dhaba.

I have met an Oromo who spoke Basic Somali in Europe, kind of weird. Never met a Habesha that spoke Somali.

Its usually the Oromo Muslims that speak Somali, whereas the Habeshas don't bother learning other languages.

Generally, Oromo Christians are culturally closer to Habesha Ethnic groups, therefore many of them speak Amharic & other Habesha languages in addition to Af Oromo. Whereas, the Oromo Muslims tend to speak Somali in addition to their native Af Oromo (also most Oromo Muslims speak Amharic because its the official language of Ethiopia).

Ethiopia is a safe country. Only some elite Ethiopians (journalists, outspoken public figures/academics etc) who are targeted by the Ethiopian government get their asylum claims accepted, not average joes.

This is why Ethiopians in the West tend to be of a higher caliber, especially in America.

The Ethiopians you find in Europe tend to be either Tigray Ethiopians who larped as Eritreans or Somali Ethiopians who larped as Somalia Somalis and got in with false asylum claims.

We had surprisingly strong cultural power in east Africa not that long ago. Ethiopians and Kenyans used to love our music during the kacaan. But you would struggle to find a Somali listening to their music.

We are also seen as the custodians of the faith in east Africa so Muslims from different countries in the region want to be close to us.

I have an oromo (uncle) who was very close to my family he would help us move house during the time we struggled he can speak good somali as well

It’s not worth looking at the census because everyone who is born in Ethiopia ticks it off so they’re counted as Ethiopians when looking at the statistics. Other ethnicities are not listed in the papers.

The only way to find the accurate estimations is to meet with the Oromo communities.

theres some oromo churches and a Oromo community center in Seattle also, they also have a muslim population here
