Before i start, just want to point out i haven't been back home before.

Always wondered how do people buy meat back home, do you have to buy a whole animal even if you only want say 2 kilos.

How do people store meat?

Are there butchers and do they have cold storage?

Neither have I but I assume they do they’re a lot more advanced than you think for example they’re using their own version of applepay/mobile payments.etc

It isn't that i don't think they are advanced, i am looking at different business opportunities that i will inshallah be exploring this summer. I will only be going this year for research and then inshallah create the businesses i believe i have the most chance of succeeding with next year.

You go to the market everyday and buy what you need for that day. Everything ia fresh and no leftovers. Livestock ia brought from miyee every morning.
Fish have cold storages. I used to buy 2 goats a month and cut it up and put it in a frezzer.

We need more cold storage for fish because during the rough ocean season there is a shortage some times.
About 10 to 15k for cold storage units from china.
Plus it could be used for storing veggies

In Muqdisho there is a meat processing factory, and it's pretty modern. How much you buy depends on where you buy from, however most butchers will sell you the exact amount, removing the necessity to buy a whole animal. However, if you don't live near the coastal area or in a big town or city, then you may have to split a whole animal among your friends and family. Storage of meat depends on location and how much money you have, those who have money buy a generator for their household and eventually a fridge/freezer, meanwhile those who aren't so well off tend to either buy enough for a day or two or dry them into jerky.

I’m currently in hargeisa, everything is expensive considering it’s a third world country. Meat is around $12 per kilo. Milk is around $1.60 per liter. Fruits aren’t cheap either. Dining at a 3 start restaurant will cost you $12 per person. WTF. I’m gonna travel to Ukraine and Thailand next time.

Interesting. Prices should reflect local income capacity. This seems inflated and not adjusted according to local capacity. Where is your market controls and laws? But then again, they must know something or else they will lose their produces and get nothing and be out of business in the long run. Especially perishable items, you can't sell that expensive or it will ROT. It's not like an IPHONE that u can keep on shelf.

Easily 10k NGO/mid level government workers in that city earning more than 20k a year. Add to that the diaspora, buisness owners and the lack of infrastructure to produce dairy/vegetables.

Everything but livestock and charcoal is imported to Somaliland from abroad. The levies placed on companies via berbera and wajaale are so expensive, that most non habr awal buisnesses use the bosaso port.

You may ask with: all this money floating around why is Hargeisa a shithole?

Somaliland is a habr awal kleptocracy. Most habr jeclos will run to their defence b-but dahabshiil and siilanyo... Dahabshiil will be made obsolete by world remit in the coming years and all the government property siilanyo gave to his tol has been transferred habr awal.

But habar awal is smart they need to charge u HIGH price or else ur prostituting them and they gain nothing. Bosaso port is used like a and nothing is put into bosaso, they just run back to their tuulo and make a killing cuz the tax is so low. I hate puntland economic policy. They damage our roads, our port, and we just collect 2 dollars which wont cover the maintainance let alone inu meesha dhismo.

I've added more to my original post sxb.

it's not really prostituting as they are using puntland businesses during their trip. Spreading the money around instead of just a single sub clan benefiting.

@Qabille Puntland built Bosaso, be it from mudug-nugaal-or Bari. They re-invest back in the city, they create headquarters and properties in the city. These rahanwayn do not. These southies do not. These non habar awal do not. What is that to u if it's not prostituting? small trade market doesn't benefit puntland, their dominated by rahanwayn now. So this money you spreading while your there for a few days doesn't even go to Bosaso, it goes straight to Baidoa in the end.

Bosaso is a long way up from sws man. It's semi peaceful now... Just deport them like cattle every couple of months like we do to the oromo.

Puntland is far safer place if we just got rid of all these non puntland Somalis. When it was just us, we knew each other, but these influx of people from outside somalia entering our towns is what is making the population so large and thru this comes increased crime and instability. I don't mind to deal with the increased crime and instability if we get a benefit but we do not. The petty tax their pay just covers maintenance of staff members at the port. There is no 'extra' money to inject into the city to even upgrade a road cause it's all done by 'hayads'
