I think that’s the general rule but it’s different in some cases, like if a woman’s husband passes away (iddah is four months and ten days) or if he divorced her (I think the wait period is a bit shorter here). She can’t get married during that time. If she’s pregnant, this extends to after she has given birth.

I hope I got that right...

The 40 day mourning period is designed to determine paternity, and that same period exists after a divorce.

3 days is the prescribed mourning period for everyone else outside those circumstances, which is also absurd if you think about it.
