Somali history was lost because of its oral nature and not because of islam. If war or disaster happened you lost a lot of history with it. Most of it is kept in stories and gabays like araweelo. That's how it is for a lot of Africans

The oral history went and was replaced with false Arab ancestors. People made up this ancestry because being a descendant of the prophets to them would give your kingdom or sultante legitimacy. The reason for it sticking around is because it was written down whereas other parts of Somali history were not
The average Somali did not read Arabic or any script back then. It was always oral up until the 70s when it was written in the Somali language.
It was written down so when kingdoms formed no matter what the nomadic population did the records were kept. The average Somali didn't need to do anything . His reer owned a piece of land and his Boqor or suldaan taught him his abtirsi. Plus abtiris was important when Somalis began expanding you had to know your lineage or it could mean life or death whereas history wasn't that important
