I've been given the opportunity to pick up a language module at university and come to choose German. Initially I deliberated between Japanese/Mandarin since their cultures are both very interesting. However, after reading a report , German has the highest economical value and it's also the easiest to learn for native english speakers. Is anyone here learning a new language? Im not that keen on German but it seems more useful, which factor outweighs the other?

I'd learn Spanish because it would make travelling easier since it's spoken in like 20 countries.
I'd learn mandarin because of China's upcoming position as a superpower
I'd learn French because I want to live and study in France, not for long of course, only 6 months to 1 year.
